NHS England and Health Education England (HEE) are working together with the profession to increase the general practitioner (GP) workforce in England. This includes measures to boost recruitment, address the reasons why GPs are leaving the profession, and encourage GPs to return to practice.

The number of doctors entering speciality training has been increasing year on year. Last year, HEE recruited the highest number of GP trainees ever - 3,473 GP trainees against a target of 3,250, a 10% increase on 2017.

Alongside training new GPs, there is a broad offer to support GPs to remain in the National Health Service including the GP Retention Scheme, the GP Retention Fund, the GP Health Service and the Releasing Time for Care Programme. It is also now quicker and easier for GPs to return to the NHS through the National Induction and Refresher Scheme.

Kent and Medway Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) has advised that the STP is organised into three training hubs which provide education and workforce strategy groups for each of the regions they cover. The training hubs have prioritised strategies in GP retention, recruitment and developing new models of care which maximise individual, cluster and locality resilience. Some of the initiative being used within the regions include encouraging GPs to develop specialism (GP with Special Interest), mentoring support for newly qualified GPs and facilitating GPs in developing a portfolio career.

Medway Clinical Commissioning Group has advised it is working with Local Care Teams to develop new ways of working, including new roles to support GPs and enhance the way they utilise technology to support practices to make the best use of GPs’ time. These new ways of working have included training administrative staff in work flow optimisation freeing up GP time.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4067", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Steve Brine"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Winchester"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Steve Brine"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-01-29", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-01-29T17:28:45.717Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-01-21", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "General Practitioners: Recruitment"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to (a) recruit and (b) retain GPs in (i) Medway, (ii) Kent and (iii) England.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3987", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rehman Chishti"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Gillingham and Rainham"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rehman Chishti"} ], "uin" : "210537"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/984599", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health and Social Care"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/984599/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
Information on the number and cost of missed general practitioner (GP) appointments is not collected or held centrally. Costs associated with GP appointments are determined by a range of locally determined factors including appointment duration, the workforce requirement and the clinical complexity of each appointment.

Public Health England’s Be Clear on Cancer campaigns aim to help improve earlier diagnosis of cancer by raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of specific cancers and encouraging those with symptoms to see their doctor promptly. The decision on which cancers should be the focus of Be Clear on Cancer campaigns is informed by a steering group, whose members include primary and secondary care clinicians and key voluntary sector organisations.

A number of factors are taken into account when deciding which campaigns to develop and run, with the main criteria being the scope to save lives through earlier diagnosis and whether the cancer has a clear and specific early sign or symptom that the general public can act upon should it arise.

Be Clear on Cancer campaigns do not currently include neuroblastoma. There are currently no plans to include neuroblastoma, however decisions on which cancers to campaign on is under constant review by the steering group, informed by the available data and medical information resources.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4067", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Steve Brine"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Winchester"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Steve Brine"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-10-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-10-17T13:46:40.097Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-10-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Neuroblastoma"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to raise public awareness of neuroblastoma.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3987", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rehman Chishti"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Gillingham and Rainham"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rehman Chishti"} ], "uin" : "177275"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/969242", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health and Social Care"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/969242/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
Nationally, access to National Health Service primary care dental services remains high. In the 24 month period ending 30 June 2018, 22.1 million adults were seen by an NHS dentist and 6.9 million children were seen by an NHS dentist in the 12 month period ending 30 June 2018.

NHS England has a legal duty to commission NHS dental services to meet the needs of the local population and to help patients who cannot find a local dentist.

NHS England South East region has carried out a health needs analysis to identify the areas of greatest need for additional NHS dental services.

The Department and NHS England are continuing to test a new way of providing NHS dental services which aims to further improve oral health and increase access. The Department does not centrally hold the requested information. NHS Medway Clinical Commissioning Group has been advised by the local council that there are defibrillators located across Medway, including at the Council’s Gun Wharf Office and sports centres in Medway Park, Strood, Hoo, Splashes and The Strand. This list is not definitive.

Steps are being taken to improve access to information on public access defibrillators (PADs). The British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded a project to determine if it was feasible and affordable to establish a national database of PADs and to make this available to ambulance services; the project concluded it was feasible and the BHF has now committed the funds to make it happen, and two ambulance services are currently involved in determining the structure and function of the database.

This database will later be offered to all services once shown to be safe and effective. The principal intention is to make the data available to and controlled by ambulance services, so that PAD location information is readily available when someone makes a 999 call. The BHF is conducting the development of the database with full professional guidance and with the support of the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4067", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Steve Brine"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Winchester"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Steve Brine"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-09-06", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-09-06T16:05:42.107Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-07-24", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Defibrillators: Medway"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what information his Department holds on the number of publically accessible defibrillators in Medway.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3987", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rehman Chishti"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Gillingham and Rainham"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rehman Chishti"} ], "uin" : "168030"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/934849", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health and Social Care"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/934849/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
The Be Clear on Cancer spend on prostate cancer is available in the following table.

Public Health England (PHE) ran a Be Clear on Cancer prostate cancer local pilot campaign from October to November 2014, specifically targeting Black African-Caribbean men, because of their significantly increased risk of developing prostate cancer compared to the general male population. The campaign included posters, print, community radio messaging, street ambassadors and public relations. All campaign materials have been made available to Prostate Cancer UK so that they can be used in any future activity.
