The Digital Single Market is a stated priority for the Juncker Commission, which could deliver significant gains for both consumers and businesses. As such, Ministers across Government regularly hold discussions in Europe and the UK with our European counterparts on the Digital Single Market including its potential effects on UK’s creative industries and publishers in particular.

Figures for patents applied for and granted in different jurisdictions can be obtained from the website of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (www.wipo.int), which collates the figures from intellectual property offices around the world.

The table shows the number of patents granted by national offices and by the European Patent Office (EPO) as recorded by WIPO, for both resident and non-resident applicants.

Many applicants choose to apply for patent protection in the UK and other European states via the EPO. However these are not recorded as grants for the individual countries in the table. According to the EPO around 75% of granted EPs take effect in the UK.

The number of granted patents in any one jurisdiction is dependent on many factors including applicants’ business models, local market structure, and the legal requirements of the jurisdiction, since patent law varies. It also reflects the capacity of patent offices to process applications.

The UK Government supports an extension of the transition period for least developed countries (LDCs) to comply with certain obligations regarding pharmaceutical products under the World Trade Organisation’s Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement. Extending the transitional arrangements for a time-bound period will allow LDCs time to ensure their intellectual property laws and practices conform with the TRIPS Agreement. The recently published government guidance on cyber security for small businesses encourages companies to consider insurance as part of their approach to managing cyber risk. Cyber insurance is a rapidly developing area with government and the insurance sector publishing a joint report on tackling cyber risks on 23 March 2015. A key component of that report is an agreement that participating insurers will include Cyber Essentials accreditation as part of their risk assessment for small and medium businesses.

As at the end of February 2015, 333 organisations had achieved Cyber Essentials accreditation and 72 had achieved Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation – a total of 405.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills does not currently hold information on how many insurance companies reference Cyber Essentials accreditation. However, Cyber insurance is a rapidly developing area with government and the insurance sector publishing a joint report on tackling cyber risks on 23 March 2015. A key component of that report is an agreement that participating insurers will include Cyber Essentials accreditation as part of their risk assessment for small and medium businesses.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills works closely with the telecoms industry, in particular via the pan industry and government Electronic Communications – Resilience & Response Group (EC-RRG) which leads on enhancing resilience levels and the preparation and exercising of incident response.
