This policy will take time to design in order to be delivered effectively.<\/p><p>Based on previous evidence, complex decarbonisation projects have long lead-in times and take time to set up. Due to this and other factors, the steel sector indicated in response to the 2019 Call for Evidence that their preference is for the CSF to be launched in 2023. Other schemes are available to support the sector and are live now, including the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund.<\/p><p>Decarbonising UK industry is a core part of the Government\u2019s ambitious plan for the green industrial revolution. We have supported the development of COVID-19 vaccines in the UK through a number of investments, including:<\/p><ul><li>£20 million to fund clinical trials of the University of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.<\/li><li>Over £40 million for the development of Imperial College London\u2019s vaccine.<\/li><li>£33.6 million for the Human Challenge Programme.<\/li><li>£22 million for a world-leading study to test the effectiveness of combinations of different COVID-19 vaccines. This will also fund the world\u2019s first study assessing the effectiveness of a third dose of vaccine to improve the response against current and future variants of COVID-19.<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>The Government has also funded the NHS Registry, developed by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), to enable individuals to sign up to participate in COVID-19 vaccine trials. This has made the UK well-suited to facilitate clinical trials that are essential to the development of any vaccine. As of 9 June 2021, over 502,000 people had signed up.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The UK has also joined COVAX, an international initiative to support the discovery, manufacture, and fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines across the world. This includes contributing £548 million, as one of the largest donors, to the COVAX Advance Market Commitment, which has already helped over 72 low- and middle-income countries to receive vaccine doses.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In addition to this, the Government has invested over £300 million to secure and scale-up the UK\u2019s manufacturing capabilities to be able to respond to this pandemic, as well as any future pandemics.<\/p>"}

The industry decarbonisation pathways technical annex of the strategy (pg. 153-155) presents two possible options for the decarbonisation of the iron and steel industry: Our wide-ranging support also includes: providing over £500m in recent years to help with the costs of energy; a £315m Industrial Energy Transformation Fund, which aims to support businesses with high energy use to cut their bills and reduce carbon emission; and our £250m Clean Steel Fund\u202fthat will support the decarbonisation of the steel sector<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>"}
