We are doing this in a number of ways. Through our bilateral work we lobby host governments to raise individual cases and highlight practices and laws that discriminate against people on the basis of their religion or belief. For example, the Foreign Secretary raised the rights of all Pakistani citizens, including religious minorities, during his visit to Pakistan in November 2016. Multilaterally, we work to sustain consensus support for United Nations Human Rights Council resolutions which promote freedom of religion. We also support a number of projects at grass roots level. For example, we are funding a network of human rights defenders who are working for Freedom of Religion or Belief in South Asia. In Syria and Iraq, where Christians and people of other religions have suffered such appalling persecution and violence at the hands of Daesh, our main contribution to ending the persecution of religious minorities is our support for the international effort to defeat Daesh and return the region to stability and peace.<\/p><p> <\/p>"}

In the meeting and subsequent letters, I recognised the Sri Lankan government's efforts to improve the human rights situation in Sri Lanka. I also welcomed their co-sponsorship of UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1. I encouraged accelerated progress towards fulfilling the commitments their government made in co-sponsoring Resolution 34/1 and raised the importance of the return of all military-held private land, the delivery of devolution through constitutional reform, the establishment of credible transitional justice mechanisms and the development of new counter-terrorism legislation in line with international human rights standards.<\/p><p>The UK is committed to the full implementation of Resolution 34/1 and will continue to support the Government of Sri Lanka in its efforts to promote reconciliation and human rights.<\/p>"}

However an Amnesty International report published on 11 April estimated that the number of executions carried out in China each year numbers in the &quot;thousands&quot;, and is more than the rest of the world combined.<\/p><p>The UK opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and we continue to urge the Chinese authorities to reduce their use of the death penalty and provide details of the numbers of executions in China. We last raised these concerns at the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue in October 2016, which I attended.<\/p><p>Through our network of diplomatic posts, the UK is working with Chinese legal experts and the Chinese judiciary to support legislative and judicial reforms to limit the use of the death penalty. We have welcomed reductions in the number of crimes that attract the death penalty and the Supreme People's Court mandatory review of all death sentences.<\/p>"}
