As the Prime Minister has made clear, this government is committed to improving the treatment of female offenders. We are looking into options including tagging, problem solving courts and alternative resettlement units to improve our care for female offenders. This is particularly important if they are pregnant or have young children.<\/p>

We are working with local areas to encourage a more effective joined-up multi-agency approach to address the often complex needs of female offenders. We have awarded £200k in grant funding to pilot the development of these partnership models. All women\u2019s prisons now have embedded resettlement services. These are provided under contract by the Community Rehabilitation Companies which are required to make sure that their services are tailored to women\u2019s specific needs.<\/p>

Two 25-bed open units were opened at HMP/ YOIs Styal and Drake Hall earlier this year. The units are situated outside of the perimeter fence and only thoroughly risk-assessed women offenders will be eligible to be located there, focusing on helping them into jobs and preparing them for release.<\/p>

Additionally a 34 bed unit has been opened within the perimeter of HMP/YOI Foston Hall and two units totalling 78 places are shortly to open within HMP/YOI Eastwood Park. The Prisoners\u2019 Earnings Act 1996 was brought into force on 26 September 2011. It enables prison governors to impose a levy of up to 40% on the wages of low-risk prisoners who work outside prison on temporary licence, in order to prepare for their eventual release.<\/p> <\/p> The table below sets out the numbers of female offenders who are in paid work while on resettlement day release and are paying 40% of their wage to Victim Support for each women\u2019s prison as of 17 June 2015.<\/p> <\/p>
