Breaches of this legislation could lead to an unlimited fine and/or two years imprisonment on indictment.<\/p>

The Mayor of London is responsible for air quality standards in London. He has set up a Low Emission Zone and has announced the introduction of an Ultra-Low Emission Zone Scheme to ensure that all vehicles driving in the centre of London will be zero or low emission by 2020. A plan to deliver cleaner taxis across London has also been announced to help support London taxi driver\u2019s transition to zero emission capable taxis. Defra\u2019s air quality grant scheme has awarded funding to support the Mayor\u2019s Breathe Better Together public awareness campaign to encourage behaviour change and tackle air pollution. Defra awarded a separate grant to Westminster City Council for on-street electric vehicle charging infrastructure.<\/p>

The Government is currently consulting on plans for how towns and cities can reduce emissions, alongside a national framework that seeks to bring the UK into compliance with limits for nitrogen dioxide in a number of areas by 2020 and in London by 2025.<\/p>

The Government published the report \u2018Review of Effectiveness of Local Authority Action Plans (LAQM) and Future Policy Options for LAQM\u2019 in 2013, which looked at a broad selection of local authorities with Air Quality Management Areas that ranged from hotspots to large areas of exceedance. This report concluded that although the review and assessment part of the LAQM regime was working very well, though too bureaucratic, some improvements could also be made to the action planning process.<\/p>
We are currently reviewing the Local Air Quality Management system to reduce bureaucracy and enable greater focus on taking action, and intend to consult on a streamlined reporting system and revised guidance later this year.<\/p>

One project in the Environment Agency\u2019s national priority programme reported delays. The start of work on Jacks Key Reservoir, Darwen was delayed due to detailed site investigation showing that the project is more complex than originally anticipated.
