Defra has invested over £26 million since 2015 on work to directly counter illegal wildlife trade in animals and plants internationally to benefit nature, people, the economy and protect global security. This includes projects to reduce demand, strengthen enforcement, ensure effective legal frameworks and develop sustainable livelihoods.

Defra is the lead department for tackling the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and works collaboratively with other Government departments, including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Home Office and Ministry of Defence to deliver the UK's ambition to combat the IWT. This has included joint Ministerial working to convene the largest ever global IWT Conference in London 2018.

The Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund has committed over £26m to 85 projects tackling the IWT around the world since it was launched at the London IWT Conference in 2014. In addition, Defra works across Government to ensure that our international programming to counter the IWT, using Official Development Assistance, aligns with and supports wider UK and foreign policy ambition, delivering impactful and effective counter-IWT projects on the ground.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4522", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rebecca Pow"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Taunton Deane"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Rebecca Pow"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2021-06-21", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2021-06-21T16:39:55.473Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "13"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2021-06-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Wildlife: Smuggling"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what discussions officials in his Department have had with officials in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on the provision of support to countries for tackling the source of the illegal wildlife trade.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1447", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andrew Rosindell"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Romford"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Andrew Rosindell"} ], "uin" : "13874"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1331998", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1331998/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We recognise that international cooperation is essential to tackle the illegal wildlife trade (IWT). The UK has supported strategic join-up with other countries. For example, in 2018, the UK convened the largest ever global IWT conference at which 65 countries signed up to the London Declaration, which calls on the international community to act together to support and build urgent collective action against the IWT.

We work with international partners directly through supporting initiatives to combat the IWT. This includes Defra’s Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, work with G7 Ministers to agree priorities and commitments for tackling the IWT, Ministerial and official contact with counterparts in countries affected by the IWT, and through joint initiatives under relevant international agreements such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Financial Action Task Force.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4522", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rebecca Pow"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Taunton Deane"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Rebecca Pow"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2021-06-18", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2021-06-18T12:47:41.163Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "13"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2021-06-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Wildlife: Smuggling"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what discussions he has had with counterparts in other countries on the development of a joint strategy to tackle wildlife crime and the illegal wildlife trade.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1447", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andrew Rosindell"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Romford"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Andrew Rosindell"} ], "uin" : "13875"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1173069", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1173069/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The UK Government is at the forefront of international efforts to protect endangered wildlife from poaching and illegal trade. We are investing over £36 million between 2014 and 2021 to support practical action in developing countries, including our counter-poaching Task Force in Africa, 75 projects so far funded from our Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, and through the International Consortium on Combatting Wildlife Crime. We are also contributing £250 million to the Global Environment Facility between 2018 and 2022 which, amongst other things, supports the world’s biggest fund for tackling illegal wildlife trade, the Global Wildlife Programme.

A further £30 million will be invested in tackling poaching and wildlife crime between 2021 and 2024 as part of the £220 million International Biodiversity Fund recently announced by the Prime Minister.
