Assessments of the current membership of and the candidates for election to the Committee on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women are made jointly by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

All members and candidates for election to the Committee on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women are assessed against a number of criteria, including their moral standing, competence in the field, and ability to exercise their functions independently of the government they have been nominated by. Consideration is also given to fair representation of geographical regions, gender, and different legal systems. Candidates are elected by the 193 UN member states.

HMG is confident that the members of the Committee on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women are able to discharge their mandate.

The Government is strongly committed to advancing equality for transgender people and ending discrimination in the workplace. The Equality Act 2010 provides protection from discrimination because of gender reassignment in employment.

In March 2011 the Government published Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality: Moving Forward; and in December 2011 Advancing transgender equality: a plan for action both of which set out the actions to be taken across Government to enhance equality for transgendered individuals. Actions included the Department for Work and Pensions and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs improving the experiences of transgender people seeking work. These include providing employers with help on employing transgender people and ensuring training is available to Jobcentre Plus staff on the specific challenges faced by transgender people.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/2539", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Northover"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Northover"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2014-06-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2014-06-25T13:59:22.5940477Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "10"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Culture, Media and Sport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Culture, Media and Sport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2014-06-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Gender Recognition"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to tackle employment discrimination amongst transgender people.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/143", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness King of Bow"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Baroness King of Bow"} ], "uin" : "HL369"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?answeringDeptShortName=Culture%2C+Media+and+Sport&_page=1&answer.answeringMember.label=Biography+information+for+Baroness+Northover&max-questionFirstAnswered.=2014-08-18T09%3A46%3A52.3354028Z&max-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2019-07-18T15%3A57%3A32.143Z", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 15, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
