DFID invests in the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) to improve access to critical infrastructure services for people in the poorest regions of Africa and Asia \u2013 in sectors such as power, communications, transport and water.<\/p>
PIDG has no active investments in any fossil fuel extraction projects. PIDG does not invest in the exploration, extraction or refining of oil, natural gas or liquid petroleum gas.<\/p>
In 2004, PIDG did provide one-off funding of $500,000 (£273,000) for technical assistance to the Government of Mozambique on the feasibility of establishing a coal mine in the town of Moatize in Mozambique. DFID\u2019s largest programme in South Sudan is our Humanitarian Assistance and Resilience programme, which provides life-saving assistance and helps people cope with conflict and climate shocks. Our Building Resilience through Asset Creation and Enhancement programme provides complementary support to help reduce hunger and mitigate conflict in rural areas.<\/p>

DFID also makes a major contribution to the delivery of essential services in South Sudan, through our Girls Education South Sudan programme, which has a particular focus on supporting girls to complete their schooling; and through the DFID-led multi-donor Health Pooled Fund, through which we are supporting over 800 frontline health centres across South Sudan.<\/p>

Gender equality is a top development priority for the UK. Girls and women across the world are held back by systematic and entrenched inequality and discrimination.<\/p>

This year\u2019s UN Commission on the Status of Women is particularly important: 2020 marks the 25th<\/sup> anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the foundational international agenda for women\u2019s empowerment agreed in 1995, and five years since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. DFID will be attending the event.<\/p> <\/p> Our engagement with CSW will reinforce the UK\u2019s bold leadership on gender equality, in the face of an increasingly coordinated and effective opposition to women\u2019s rights globally.<\/p> <\/p> DFID is working across government and with like-minded partners to drive forward our international priorities for girls and women including: negotiating a progressive and forward-looking Political Declaration, championing the critical role of civil society in collaborating with governments, the UN and other key actors, and standing firm against the attempted rollback of the international framework.<\/p>"}
