Freedom of religion and belief was included on the agenda at the recent EU-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue which took place in December 2017. The EU raised concerns about harassment and attacks against religious communities in Vietnam, and urged the Vietnamese government to ensure that the new Law on Religion and Belief is implemented in line with international standards.<\/p>"}

This is an important opportunity for Nepal to demonstrate its commitment to fundamental freedoms and human rights in Nepal.<\/p><p>Since then, on 26 October, I led a debate in the House of Commons on freedom of religion and belief, during which human rights in Nepal were raised. I subsequently wrote to the Prime Minister of Nepal expressing concerns over the recently passed Criminal Code. I have also raised this matter with the Nepali Ambassador in London, and our Ambassador in Nepal discussed this in early October with the Nepali Prime Minister. There are many positive elements in the Code, including criminalising torture, enforced disappearances, forced labour and slavery. However, some wording could be open to misinterpretation and potentially prevent legitimate expression of religion or belief for fear of prosecution. Both I and the British Embassy in Kathmandu have urged the Government of Nepal to ensure the final implementation of the Code does not curtail freedom of religious belief, and meets Nepal's international human rights obligations and international standards.<\/p>"}

However, we believe that the duties that would be covered by such a role are covered by work elsewhere in the system.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Establishing an older person\u2019s commissioners would also have significant costs associated with it. Net expenditure in the first year that Northern Ireland\u2019s Older People\u2019s Commissioner was set up was around £101,674 in 2011-12 and has since increased to £876,272 in 2017-18. Recent estimates indicate that there are around 33% more over 65s in England than in Northern Ireland, suggesting such a body would create significant annual costs.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The Government is committed to making this country one of the best places to grow old in.<\/p><p>Across the health and social care system in England there are already systems in place, that are able to listen to the voices of older people and respond to their concerns.<\/p><p> <\/p>"}
