Flu vaccines for people aged 18 years and older are procured directly from manufacturers and suppliers by providers, based on their local assessment of need. The procurement and distribution of flu vaccines for the children’s aspect of the national flu programme is managed by Public Health England (PHE). Doses of flu vaccine for 2019/20 is estimated using end of season for 2018/19 that are published on GOV.UK at the following links:

Cumulative influenza vaccine uptake is collected and evaluated by Public Health England (PHE) nationally and locally. The 2018 to 2019 season included the extension of the childhood programme to all those aged nine rising to 10 years old as well as the phased delivery of the newly licensed adjuvanted vaccine for those aged 65 and over.

The national school-age vaccination programme achieved the highest levels of vaccine uptake since it started (60.8%, 2,461,563/4,051,698 in 2018/19, compared to 59.5% in 2017/18 1,998,538/3,360,997). Vaccine uptake for the pre-school children’s influenza vaccine programme has also increased further compared to previous seasons. The following table shows uptake figures for 2018/19 and 2017/18.

Uptake in adult target groups was similar or slightly lower compared to recent seasons and further work is needed to identify underpinning reasons so that uptake can be improved.

Provisional data for flu season 2018-19 (autumn to spring) shows that flu vaccine uptake in those aged 65 and over is at similar levels to previous years and close to the World Health Organization target of 75%.

Vaccine uptake in the children’s programme is at the highest level since the introduction of the programme for two and three-year olds vaccinated in general practice and for children offered the vaccine in primary school.

For pregnant women and for those in at risk groups eligible for flu vaccine, the vaccination uptake is slightly lower compared to last year. There are many reasons for this. Many patients do not appreciate how serious flu can be and the importance of protecting themselves.

Public Health England monitors the vaccine effectiveness of influenza vaccines each year against all the strains in circulation. The effectiveness observed varies from year to year, depending on factors such as the match between those strains in circulation and those in the vaccine.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) keeps the influenza vaccine programme under constant review and assesses new influenza vaccines ahead of licensure to ensure that improved products can be brought rapidly to the United Kingdom population. The JCVI has recently reviewed three new influenza vaccines with evidence of improved effectiveness. Further information is available at the following link:

www.gov.uk/government/groups/joint-committee-on-vaccination-and-immunisation#influenza-vaccines-jcvi-advice

Based on the JCVI advice, NHS England then advises doctors on when to use these newer influenza vaccines. In 2018/19 those aged 65 and above were offered adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine.
