Those most at risk from flu including people over 65, pregnant women, and those in clinical risk groups are offered annual vaccination. At-risk patients are targeted by the Public Health England and NHS England marketing campaign, Help Us Help You, which includes television, radio and advertising supported by public relations, digital search and partnership activity. Communications this year will include messages about a wider range of flu vaccines now available which offer better protection. Help Us Help You can be viewed at the following link:

Those eligible for flu vaccination can get the vaccine from their general practitioner, or in a scheme introduced in 2015/16, through local pharmacies, thus widening patient access. 80% of maternity service providers also offer vaccination to pregnant women.

As part of its assurance process NHS England works through its regional teams and clinical commissioning groups to ensure that practices with lowest uptake are contacted and action is taken to increase vaccination rates.

Public Health England is planning to spend £1,300,000 on a flu vaccination campaign to encourage eligible members of the public and health and social care workers to take up the free vaccine ahead of the winter season. The spend includes expenditure for advertising on television, radio, national and regional press, outdoor, digital, and printing, excluding VAT. Figures provided are provisional and need to be reconciled following the campaign’s conclusion in November.

NHS England has for the last three years carried out a ‘state of readiness’ assessment for the administration of the winter flu vaccine with the NHS England local public health commissioning teams.

Flu vaccines for people aged 18 years and older are procured directly from manufacturers and suppliers by providers, based on their local assessment of need. The procurement and distribution of flu vaccines for the children’s aspect of the national flu programme is managed by Public Health England (PHE). Doses of flu vaccine for 2019/20 is estimated using end of season for 2018/19 that are published on GOV.UK at the following links:

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/seasonal-flu-vaccine-uptake-in-gp-patients-monthly-data-2018-to-2019

Seasonal flu vaccines for 2019/20 are currently being manufactured and due for delivery to the market in the autumn. Vaccine production is a complex and multi-stage process, which will involve a touch-point outside of the United Kingdom.

Officials continuously monitor the flu vaccine supply landscape to enable timely and appropriate action to be taken in the event of supply issues.
