Trends in the level of borrowing in the last five years reflect the UK dealing with the consequences of significant global shocks.<\/p>
<\/p>
By 2018-19, the Government had succeeded in reducing the deficit from the 2009-10 peak by four-fifths. However, following the actions taken during the pandemic, borrowing reached a post-war high in 2020-21. While it decreased in 2021-22, this still remained more than double the level seen in 2019-20. Borrowing is expected to increase this year as the Government has taken action to support families and businesses with their energy bills.<\/p>

This will help those locked into contracts signed before recent substantial falls in the wholesale price manage their costs and provide others with reassurance against the risk of prices rising again.<\/p> <\/p> The new Energy Bills Discount Scheme will provide all eligible businesses and other non-domestic energy users across the UK with a discount on high energy bills until 31 March 2024, following the end of the current Energy Bill Relief Scheme.<\/p> It will also provide businesses in sectors with particularly high levels of energy use and trade intensity with a higher level of support.<\/p> <\/p> The new scheme strikes a balance between supporting businesses for a further 12 months, from April 2023 to March 2024, and limiting taxpayer\u2019s exposure to volatile energy markets, with a cap set at £5.5 billion.
