We are taking steps to protect vulnerable rough sleepers from COVID-19 and we are continuing to work hard to move vulnerable people away from the streets and into long-term, sustainable accommodation.<\/p>
The Next Steps Accommodation Programme makes available the financial resources needed to support local authorities and their partners to prevent those accommodated from returning to the streets. £161 million will deliver 3,300 units of\u202flonger-term move-on accommodation\u202fin 2020/2021. This is part of a total of £433 million to provide 6,000 long term, safe homes for those in need.<\/p>
£105 million\u202fwill pay for immediate support and interim accommodation to ensure that people do not return to the streets.\u202fOn 17 September we announced allocations for the short-term aspect of this fund. 274 local authorities will now share £91.5 million of funding, helping to make life-changing differences to our most vulnerable by helping to support them to rebuild their lives and addressing complex needs such as substance misuse and mental health issues. We will continue to work with local authorities to allocate remaining funds to new or emerging challenges.<\/p>
In 2020/21, £112 million has also been allocated to 276 local authorities through the Rough Sleeping Initiative, supporting the establishment or enhancement of coordinated local services for rough sleepers or those at risk of sleeping rough.<\/p>

MHCLG collect an annual official snapshot of rough sleeping which is verified by Homeless Link and provides information about the estimated number of people sleeping rough on a single night between 1 October and 30 November each year, along with some basic demographic details. This was last released in February 2020 and showed a total figure of 4,266 rough sleepers on any given night, 9% lower than the previous year. The next annual snapshot is due to take place in autumn 2020. Regarding the numbers of people currently rough sleeping, local authorities currently hold the most up to date information.<\/p>"}

Housing First\u202fhas an impressive international record in helping people with complex needs to recover and stay off the streets for good, which is why we awarded £28\u202fmillion\u202fto pilot it in three urban areas with contrasting challenges (the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and Liverpool\u202fCity Region). The pilot aims to support around 1,000 of our most vulnerable people off the streets and into safe and secure homes.<\/p>
Each individual has access to critical wrap-around support including mental health, drugs and alcohol misuse support.\u202fSince its launch, our expert advisers have been working closely with each of the three pilot regions to closely monitor and support progress.<\/p>
In response to Covid-19 we have established a Taskforce to lead the next phase of the Government\u2019s support for rough sleepers during the pandemic. The Taskforce is spearheaded by Dame Louise Casey and supported by expert advisers with extensive experience in supporting the most vulnerable in society. The Taskforce is already working closely with local authorities and agencies from across the homelessness sector, businesses, faith groups, local communities and charities, as well as across central government.<\/p>
On 24 May, we announced radical plans to provide thousands of long-term, safe homes for vulnerable rough sleepers taken off the streets during this pandemic. This ambitious commitment will be backed by £160 million in 2020/21, to inject 3,300 new units of accommodation this year, part of\u202f6,000 in total.<\/p>"}
