The Ministry of Defence and the UK remains indebted to all Afghan nationals who risked their lives working for and alongside UK forces in Afghanistan. It is in recognition of this contribution and associated risk that the Government introduced the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme on 1 April 2021 to provide relocation or other assistance to Afghan nationals who meet the criteria set out in the Immigration Rules. Service families are an integral part of the Armed Forces community, and Ministers and senior officials have communicated directly with them to provide updates on the support available, and to offer personal thanks for their continued commitment to the Armed Forces.<\/p>
Financial support has been provided through additional flexibility on allowances and entitlements, for example, for Service Family Accommodation. Costs incurred for COVID-19 testing can also be reclaimed. Safeguarding guidance and safety planning for those facing domestic abuse has been issued, and mental wellbeing support provided through the launch of the online tool HeadFIT. In addition, the Partner Career Support Programme has been launched and the application period extended until March 2021, in recognition of the impact of the pandemic.<\/p>
Specific guidance has been issued by the Department internally and externally, working alongside the Armed Forces Families Federations, information hubs such as HIVES, and the British Forces Broadcasting Service. Commonwealth Service personnel, including Fijian nationals, who meet Home Office criteria can make an application for British citizenship while serving. However, this is an individual choice as it can have personal implications in some countries.<\/p>
Commonwealth and Gurkha personnel can also choose to make an application to settle in the UK on their discharge from the UK Armed Forces after at least four years' service or following their discharge for medical reasons associated with their service.<\/p>
We recognise that the fees for such applications place a financial burden on Service personnel who wish to remain in the UK after service and the Defence Secretary has met with the Home Secretary to consider how we could offer greater flexibility in future.
