National Health Service commissioners are legally required to fund drugs and treatments recommended in National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Highly Specialised Technologies evaluations. If the drug is not recommended, and until NICE\u2019s final guidance is issued, it would be for NHS England to decide whether to make it available to patients.<\/p>
<\/p>
NICE is currently evaluating asfotase alfa (brand name Strensiq) for the treatment of paediatric-onset hypophosphatasia under its Highly Specialised Technologies programme, which looks at drugs for very small patient populations.<\/p>
<\/p>
The Evaluation Committee\u2019s preliminary recommendation, published in December 2015 for consultation, was not to recommended asfotase alfa, within its marketing authorisation, for long-term enzyme replacement therapy in paediatric-onset hypophosphatasia to treat the bone manifestations of the disease.<\/p>
<\/p>
NICE makes its recommendations based on the available evidence and in consultation with stakeholders, including manufacturers and patient groups.<\/p>
<\/p>
This is not NICE\u2019s final guidance and its recommendations may change after consultation. NICE currently expects to publish its final guidance to the NHS in October 2016.<\/p>

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is currently appraising Orkambi (lumacaftor-ivacaftor) for the treatment of cystic fibrosis homozygous for the F508del mutation.<\/p>
NHS England has advised that it has published policies that cover the different circumstances where a patient is on a clinical trial and where the drug is not subsequently approved for National Health Service use. The United Kingdom Government provides funding to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). IAVI has been instrumental in working with partners, including the United States National Institutes of Health who have undertaken the work to identify broadly neutralising antibodies from asymptomatic people infected with HIV. IAVI and its partners are still at an early stage of working with these broadly neutralising antibodies, to investigate how they might be used to prevent and treat HIV infection.<\/p>

The Department has worked with NHS England to ensure that food standards are written into the NHS Standard Contract 2016/17, the key document governing the purchase and provision of National Health Services.
