The UK is working closely with the UN and other donors at all levels, to help ensure the humanitarian response in Yemen is as coordinated as possible. This includes supporting the UN’s Humanitarian Response Plan and COVID-19 strategy in Yemen.

We engage regularly with senior UN officials, including through calls between Ministers and UN Agency Leads and between DFID’s Country Director for Yemen and the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen. We also actively participate in the UN’s weekly Yemen Humanitarian Country Team meetings.

Our recently announced £160 million commitment of UK aid to Yemen is being delivered through UN and NGO humanitarian and development partners in line with the UN’s Humanitarian Response Plan. We maintain constant dialogue with these UN agencies and NGOs to ensure we understand the challenges they are facing on the ground and identify ways in which we can support them through UK influence and diplomacy.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4366", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for James Cleverly"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Braintree"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "James Cleverly"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-07-14", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-07-14T14:53:40.313Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "20"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-07-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Yemen: Humanitarian Aid"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking with the United Nations to co-ordinate the provision of humanitarian aid to civilians in Yemen.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/411", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Barry Sheerman"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Huddersfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Barry Sheerman"} ], "uin" : "70330"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1220356", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for International Development"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1220356/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

This Government is committed to supporting a long-term movement for change on the neglected global issue of disability inclusion. The Government remains steadfast in its commitment to this agenda.

The Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy is expected to conclude later in the year, which will define the Government’s ambition for the UK’s role in the world and its outcomes will shape the objectives of the FCDO. Both the review and the merger are evidence of the Prime Minister’s commitment to a unified British foreign and development policy that will maximise our influence around the world, including on disability and gender equality.

As part of the merger discussions, we will review, refresh and build on all existing strategies, as well as developing new approaches where appropriate. We do not see the core ambitions of DFID’s Disability Inclusion strategy changing. The advancement of the inclusion of people with disabilities is as important now as when we published the strategy in 2018.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4358", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Wendy Morton"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Aldridge-Brownhills"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Wendy Morton"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-07-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-07-09T16:03:58.427Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "20"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-07-02", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: Disability"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking to ensure that the Disability Inclusion Strategy (2018 to 2023), and its successor policies, will remain a priority for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/411", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Barry Sheerman"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Huddersfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Barry Sheerman"} ], "uin" : "68281"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1205286", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for International Development"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1205286/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We welcome the UNICEF report and its recognition that DFID’s work already saves children’s lives and makes a real difference. The Government’s commitment to end preventable maternal, new-born and child deaths by 2030 is well aligned with the report’s recommendations.

We are currently working on the detailed action plan on ending preventable deaths, setting out the key shifts we, with partners in the international community, need to make to achieve the goal. An example of this action is the UK commitment to help secure at least $7.4 billion for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, through its replenishment this year. The Prime Minister has publicly stated that education, particularly girls’ education, is a priority for the UK. All UK aid education programmes have a focus on girls and young women.

Between 2009 and 2018 DFID’s spend on education doubled from almost £500 million to nearly £1 billion.

The latest data, from Statistics on International Development shows that 7% of total bilateral ODA is spent on bilateral education, all of which benefits girls. Between 2015 and 2019 DFID supported 14.8 million children to gain a decent education, of which at least 5.8 million were girls. DFID reaches and supports girls through our education investment in multilateral, international and non-governmental organisations, international influencing with other donors, foundations and non-governmental organisations.

The UK is leading global action to ensure 12 years of quality education for all girls by 2030. All UK aid education programmes have a focus on girls and young women. The UK’s Flagship Girls’ Education Challenge, the largest global fund to girls’ education, is now supporting up to 1.5million girls across 17 countries. The UK is spearheading the global girls’ education “Leave No Girl Behind” campaign, focussing on getting girls learning, building international political commitment and boosting global investment so that all girls have access to 12 years of quality education by 2030.

In August 2019 at the G7 Summit, the Prime Minister announced £90 million of new UK support for education in emergencies and crises across the world. This will support 600,000 children living in conflict areas and areas of proacted crises. We are deeply concerned by the report of attacks on health workers in Gaza. The UK is clear that no health workers or aid workers should be at risk of violence, and that they must have the protection they need from the responsible authorities to allow them to do their jobs in safety. While we recognise Israel’s right to security, we have repeatedly made clear to Israel our longstanding concerns about the way Israel Defence Forces (IDF) police protests and the border areas in Gaza, including our concerns about the use of live ammunition and excessive force by the IDF. We regularly raise with the Government of Israel the urgent need to ease all access and movement restrictions on Gaza, including for health workers.

The UK continues to strongly support the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Gaza. In 2019, the UK is supporting urgent medical needs through the International Committee for the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation. DFID recognises the essential role of Sudanese civil society in securing a transition to a stable political system that is inclusive, respects democratic norms and allows open and ongoing political dialogue. Until the end of 2018, the Local Partnerships for Dialogue Programme provided support to civil society, media, and women and youth groups, with the aim of strengthening their capacity to demand more inclusive, democratic and accountable governance.
