The Government seeks the advice of the independent and expert Low Pay Commission when making decisions on the rate at which the National Living Wage is set. The Government sets the Low Pay Commission a remit to monitor and evaluate the impact of the National Living Wage. When making recommendations in relation to the National Living Wage the Low Pay Commission is asked to consider the pace of the increase, taking into account evidence relating to the economy, employment and unemployment levels, and any other relevant policy changes. The Government’s decisions on setting the National Living Wage will continue to be guided by this analysis and advice.

The Government recently announced that the National Living Wage will increase to £7.50 from April 2017. This was the rate recommended by the Low Pay Commission. Our ambition is that the National Living Wage should continue to increase to reach 60% of median earnings by 2020, subject to sustained economic growth.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4115", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Margot James"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Stourbridge"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Margot James"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-12-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-12-07T17:15:27.253Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "201"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-11-29", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Living Wage"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what assessment his Department has made of the potential implications for its policies of the recommendations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in its November 2016 Global Economic Outlook that caution was needed in rolling out increases to the living wage on account of their potential effect on employment.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/545", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Paul Flynn"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Newport West"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Paul Flynn"} ], "uin" : "55374"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/647656", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/647656/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The smart metering rollout is making good progress, with over 4.2 million smart meters already installed as of end June 2016. The national data and communications infrastructure for smart metering (provided by the Data and Communications Company) is now live across the country, and the Government is committed to energy suppliers offering every household and small business in Great Britain a smart meter by the end of 2020.
