Sustainable biomass has an important role to play in our electricity mix as it can help balance demand on the grid by being dispatchable, balancing out intermittent renewables like solar and wind.<\/p>

We are committed to keeping energy costs as low as possible and subsidies for biomass are monitored through the Levy Control Framework. Biomass plants only receive subsidy for the electricity output which complies with our sustainability criteria<\/p>

We have consistently stated that we see the use of biomass conversions as a transitional technology. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has considered whether shale gas production at a significant scale can be compatible with the UK\u2019s carbon budgets. The CCC concluded that it can be compatible if certain conditions are met, which have been set out as three \u201ctests"[1]. We believe that our robust regulatory regime and determination to meet our carbon budgets means UK shale development is compatible with our goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>
