The Government takes the enforcement of the National Minimum Wage very seriously. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) review every complaint that is referred to them by the Pay and Work Rights Helpline.<\/p>

Within that obligation, HMRC work to priorities agreed with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). To identify sectors where non-payment of National Minimum Wage is more likely HMRC and BIS analyse numbers of complaints and incidences of non-compliance and take account of information from, for example, other Government Departments, Trade Union representatives and the Low Pay Commission . Using this information, and often in conjunction with other Government Departments, HMRC have undertaken targeted enforcement on areas such as the care sector, car washes and the retail sector, amongst others.<\/p>

Illustrative projections published by the Treasury at Budget 2014 show that running a long-term balanced current budget would result in public sector net debt of around 60% of GDP in 2035-36, while running a long-term overall surplus of 1% of GDP would result in public sector net debt of around 32% of GDP. The Government's long-term economic plan is backing small businesses as they set up and grow. As part of this plan we are cutting taxes and reducing red tape to help businesses.<\/p>

In particular, the employment allowance was introduced in April 2014, and allows businesses and charities throughout the UK to deduct up to £2,000 off their employer national insurance contributions (NICs) bill each year.<\/p>

The UK has been consistently clear: at a time when governments across the EU are taking difficult decisions to manage their deficits, the European Commission should not be asking Governments across the EU for more money.<\/p>
