The rate at which the gender pay gap will narrow is dependent on a large number of complex factors but this government is working hard to help employers close the gap as soon as possible. Whilst we are pleased that the gap is at a record low of 17.9%, having dropped by 9.6 percentage points since 1997, there is more to do to ensure this progress continues.

In 2017 we introduced ground-breaking regulations requiring large employers to publish their gender pay gaps annually. We are now supporting employers to develop action plans and take effective steps to reduce their gaps.

The government is also:

- Spending around £6billion in 2019-20 on childcare support and we have already doubled the childcare entitlement for working parents of 3 and 4 year olds.

- Set up a taskforce to make flexible working a possibility for all employees; and last year ran a £1.5million campaign promoting Shared Parental Leave.

- Supporting the Hampton-Alexander Review, aiming to get more women into senior leadership positions and improve gender diversity in the executive pipeline.

In order to support employers to address their gender pay differences, we have published evidence-based guidance on practical actions they can take to close the gap, alongside help to diagnose the causes of their gaps and develop effective action plans.

We have been working with Government departments and representative bodies to understand the underlying causes of the gender pay gap in different public sector workforces, and to consider what measures will have a positive impact. It is unacceptable that users of assistance dogs experience unlawful discrimination in the provision of goods, services or public functions. The Equality Act 2010 places a duty on organisations and service providers to make reasonable adjustments to improve access to premises and services so that disabled customers, including those with assistance dogs, have the same access to goods and services and are not placed at a substantial disadvantage compared to non-disabled customers.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is the public body responsible for enforcing the Equality Act. In 2017, the EHRC published two pieces of guidance - a guide to help businesses understand what they can do to meet their legal duties to assistance dog owners, and a guide to help tourism businesses welcome people with access requirements. The EHRC supports disabled individuals who have experienced discrimination to take their cases to court. The Government’s tailored review of the EHRC, published in November 2018, has recommended that EHRC should focus on the use of its unique powers as enforcer and regulator of the Equality Act.

The Government Equalities Office is working to address the persistent gendered barriers that women and men face at every stage of their lives. As part of our new strategy we will set out what the Government is doing to ensure that people have financial independence and resilience, as well as real choice and influence over the economic decisions in their lives. This includes the choices that women make around whether to have children, and how to balance work and care.

The Government provides a range of support for new mothers, depending on their needs and the needs of their families. These include breastfeeding, perinatal mental health, and health visitor support.

Enabling women and men to spend quality time with their child in the first year is important to support families to bond. The right to request flexible working, and the introduction of Shared Parental Leave helps parents to balance work and care between them, in a way that works for their families.

Goal 10 is to reduce inequality within and between countries, and so responsibility for delivery is shared across Government. For example, the Office for Disability Issues in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) leads on disability policy, the Race Disparity Unit in the Cabinet Office is key to our approach on race equality, DWP and HM Treasury are responsible for addressing income inequality within the UK, and the Department for International Development leads on tackling inequality between countries.

To aid transparency, all Departments are expected to set out how their activity aligns to the Goals in their Single Departmental Plans. The Government Equalities Office is coordinating reporting for Goal 10 across Government for the Voluntary National Review this year.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4399", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Victoria Atkins"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Louth and Horncastle"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Victoria Atkins"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-05-01", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-05-01T15:25:15.427Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "31"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Women and Equalities"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Women and Equalities"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-04-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Poverty"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Minister for Women and Equalities, which Department is responsible for monitoring and implementing policies relating to the targets under Sustainable Development Goal 10 on economic inequality.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4628", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Danielle Rowley"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Midlothian"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Danielle Rowley"} ], "uin" : "243555"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.json?_page=1&min-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2019-03-26T15:03:10.18Z&_properties=answer.isMinisterialCorrection,legislature,legislature,houseId,answer.answeringMember.label,answer.dateOfAnswer&_sort=-AnsweringBody,answer.dateOfAnswer&max-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2019-05-16T14:21:24.147Z", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 7436, "type" : "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"} }
