star this property answer text
The UK is concerned about the humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe which includes a lack of access to clean and safe water for Zimbabweans. Out of an estimated daily demand of 800 mega litres, the City of Harare produces approximately 500 mega litres. We are also worried about the vast leakages in the water system due to old and ill-maintained infrastructure, and the diminishing water quality.

Through a multi-donor trust fund called ZIMFUND, the UK has, since 2010, supported the rehabilitation of water supply infrastructure to improve waste water treatment capacity and water supply to some areas. Through UNICEF we are supporting the City of Harare with repairing water infrastructures and boreholes in cholera prone areas. In early 2020, the UK adapted existing programmes to support Zimbabwe's Covid-19 response which included access to clean and safe water for Zimbabweans. The UK also allocated £5 million to UNICEF for cholera prevention and emergency response.
more like this

During our discussion I raised the UK's bilateral relationship with Zimbabwe and emphasised HMG's desire to see Zimbabwe succeed. I also raised our concerns regarding human rights, the shrinking of democratic space and the importance of Zimbabwe demonstrating a positive trajectory ahead of the 2023 elections. I also took the opportunity to highlight the targeted nature of UK sanctions on Zimbabwe, outlining that they do not affect the economy or the people of Zimbabwe. I also welcomed Zimbabwe's recently announced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and their signature to the Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use.
more like this

In Mozambique, this includes working with local and international partners and the Government of Mozambique to support disaster planning and response e.g. by providing emergency assistance for those displaced, and by funding partners to pre-position emergency shelter and non-food items. Ahead of Cyclone Freddy, the UK-supported START Fund has already allocated up to £275 thousand to its network members to help provide direct assistance. The British High Commissioner has participated in the government-led crisis response mechanism, and UK flood modelling is supporting the national and international response.

In Zimbabwe, British Embassy Harare is engaging with the UN-convened Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), which is tracking and assessing the risks of Cyclone Freddy in coordination with government partners. We are continuing to monitor the cyclone and coordinate with the HCT on preparedness and response plans. Earlier this month, the START Fund also allocated up to £192 thousand in response to severe weather in Zimbabwe.

The UK regularly urges the Zimbabwean Government to live up to their own constitution and ensure the opposition, civil society and journalists are allowed to operate without harassment. My predecessor most recently raised the human rights situation in Zimbabwe with Foreign Minister Shava on 9 June.

Following two years of recession the Zimbabwean economy is recovering in part due to improvements in macro-economic management. However, the economy still faces severe challenges and remains fragile, largely due to ongoing corruption and a failure to properly address problems with the exchange rate and subsidies. The social situation is concerning with 49% of the population estimated to be in extreme poverty in 2020. Zimbabwe has achieved one of the highest rates of COVID-19 vaccination coverage in Africa.

We welcome Zimbabwe's recent commitment to the 'Kenyatta Declaration' to spend 20% of their budget on education. We continue to monitor social and economic developments closely, encouraging the Government of Zimbabwe to improve economic policy and management, while protecting the poorest. The security situation remains stable.
