<p>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) updated referral guidelines for suspected cancer in June 2015. This was estimated to save up to 5,000 lives a year, with general practitioners urged to think of cancer sooner and lower the referral threshold for tests.</p><p>Health professionals and the organisations that employ them are expected to take NICE guidance into account when deciding what treatments to give people.</p>
