star this property answer text <p>Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) are already expected to develop engagement plans to maximise registration levels in their local area, including among young people.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Government announced on 9 January 2015 that all EROs will receive a share of £6.8 million funding to support their work in driving up registration rates among under registered groups including young people.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Electoral Commission monitors the performance of EROs in implementing these plans.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>On 9 January Government announced that almost £10 million will be given to local authorities and to national activity to boost the number of people registering to vote around the country. This is in addition to the £4.2 million announced last year.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>£6.8 million of the funding has been allocated to local authorities so that they can expand their programmes of canvassing and other activities aimed at encouraging people to register to vote.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Up to £2.5 million will be used to fund wider activity, including working with national organisations to encourage groups who are not as well represented on the electoral register in general, such as young people including students and overseas voters.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Electoral Commission’s (EC) assessment of the completeness and accuracy of the last electoral registers published under the previous household system is published in the quality of the 2014 electoral registers in Great Britian report. I have placed a copy in the library.</p><p>The Commission will next report on the completeness and accuracy of the electoral registers following the end of the transition to IER, which will either be in December 2015 or December 2016.</p><p>The Commission’s next report on progress in the transition to Individual Electoral Registration (IER) will be published later this month. This will focus on the electoral registers as at 1 December 2014 in England and Wales.</p><p>Almost nine in ten electors were automatically transferred to the new IER register without having to do anything. I have placed the Government's assessment of this process in the library.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Office for National Statistics published data on the number of attainers on each local authority and parliamentary register in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on 26 February. It can be found here:</p><p><a href="http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/pop-estimate/electoral-statistics-for-england--wales-and-northern-ireland/2014/stb---2014-ewni-electoral-statistics.html" target="_blank">http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/pop-estimate/electoral-statistics-for-england--wales-and-northern-ireland/2014/stb---2014-ewni-electoral-statistics.html</a></p><p> </p><p>It is not however possible to identify the proportion of 16 and 17 year olds and 18 to 24 year olds who have registered as attainers as age information is not captured on electoral registers.</p><p> </p><p>Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) are best placed to understand their local circumstances and every ERO in Great Britain has received a share of £6.8 million funding to encourage voter registration, including among young people and attainers.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Government has awarded funding to a number of organisations to promote voter registration. This includes the NUS and other student groups, UK Youth and the British Youth Council, all of which will deliver activity targeted at attainers and young people. The Electoral Commission’s awareness campaign for the General Election also includes a specific focus on attainers.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>There have been over 1.2 million applications to register to vote from 16-24 year olds since June and over 100,000 applications from attainers since 1 December.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Since 2010 the Government has provided two funds to increase voter registration.</p><p>The participation fund ended in 2010-11 and in that year provided £54,708 to local authorities, including 3 in Wales, on promoting electoral registration, voting and awareness of election processes. Non-responders will receive two written reminders and a visit from a canvasser. </strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>The Electoral Commission’s national awareness campaign includes activity aimed at young people. The Commission has encouraged EROs to work with schools to target attainers as part of their public engagement work. </strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Online registration makes registering to vote simpler and quicker than ever before for nearly all electors - 530,511 16-24 year olds have applied since 11 July 2014.</strong></p><p> </p> more like this
