star this property answer text We are concerned to hear that a Pakistan court has upheld the imposition of the death penalty in the case of Asia Bibi. We support the EU's recent statement of concern and hope that the verdict will be overturned on appeal. We regularly raise at the highest levels the misuse of blasphemy laws in Pakistan both against Muslims and against religious minorities. We have consistently pressed the Government of Pakistan on the issue of the death penalty and expressed our principled opposition to it in all cases. We will continue to raise these issues. more like this

There were 103 in 2010, 24 in 2011, 229 in 2012 and 496 in 2013, as stated in the reply of 17 June, Official Report, column WA38, given by the former Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, the right hon. Baroness Warsi. The Government cannot readily provide statistics for incursions before 2010 as this could only be obtained at a disproportionate cost.

Incursions are a violation of sovereignty, not a threat to it. They do not change the fact of British sovereignty over British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. The Government challenges and protests all unlawful incursions and these actions effectively defend our sovereignty over British Gibraltar Territorial waters.
more like this

star this property answer text
Coastal change, through erosion or flooding, has always been a risk for those living and working by the sea.

The Environment Agency has strategic oversight of Shoreline Management Plans (20 in England), which are the responsibility of Coastal Protection Authorities. These plans set the direction and preferred management option over a 100 year timeframe and are under-pinned by evidence and a high level economic, social, and environmental assessment.

Over the next three years, we and the Environment Agency (EA) are working closely with the coastal authorities, including funding of £1 million, to refresh Shoreline Management Plans, to ensure that there is consistency and that they are using the best, most up to date evidence. This programme will ensure the Shoreline Management Plans and Coastal Protection Authorities remain effective in light of the most recent UK climate change predictions which will be published later this month.

The EA are also funding a £23 million, five year programme of regional coastal monitoring by these groups, to support decision making.

The current phase of the programme which will continue to have a focus on marginalised communities including the Manjo will be supported by Ireland, Sweden and Norway.

At this time we believe the Ethiopian government is taking steps to address the challenges which the Manjo and other marginalised groups face, and that continued engagement in-country alongside our international partners is the best course of action. star this property answer text
The British Embassy in Addis Ababa has been working closely with our international and multilateral partners, and through our bilateral programmes, to increase the levels of investment in Ethiopia. We note the $1.2bn World Bank Operation with Ethiopia was approved on 30 October. The Minister for Africa discussed prospects for this, and economic development more widely, when she represented the UK at our annual bilateral aid talks with Ethiopia on 5 October. During her visit, she announced a £66 million package of UK technical assistance to the economic reform process.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is now finalising the new roles to deliver the new strategic approach to Africa, announced by the Prime Minister on her regional visit. While it is not possible to give final figures at this stage, this is a significant uplift across our African network of posts and will include new roles focussed on supporting growth, trade and economic partnerships in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa more widely.
