star this property answer text <p>The Department assesses the impact of tobacco control measures on an ongoing basis as it develops policy and considers new measures.</p><p> </p><p>In September 2013, the Department published <em>An Audit of the impact of the Department of Health’s Regulations upon business</em>. A copy of the report is attached. The Audit report covered all regulations for which the Department has responsibility believed to have a potential cost to business, including those relating to tobacco control.</p><p> </p><p>Costs and benefits were estimated where possible using standard government methodology and the impacts to society were estimated based on economic costs and benefits. As advised in the report, there is a robust cost-benefit case for the tobacco control regulations considered and experience shows that initiatives to reduce smoking prevalence work best in combination, with cumulative effects over time.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international treaty that the United Kingdom signed on 16 June 2003, ratified on 16 December 2004 and which entered into force for the UK on 16 March 2005. The UK has therefore consented to be bound under international law by the rights and obligations set out in the FCTC. More information on the FCTC, including the text of the treaty is at on the web at:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>www.who.int/fctc<br> <br> The Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control is an initiative of the Smokefree Action Coalition. Local councils are invited to voluntarily sign the Declaration, as “a statement of a council’s commitment to ensure tobacco control is part of mainstream public health work and commits councils to taking comprehensive action to address the harm from smoking”. star this property answer text <p>The current contract for the provision of support to local authorities in the enforcement of tobacco control legislation will end in September 2018. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute, who hold the contract, provide regular updates to the Department on agreed milestones and deliverables and will submit a final report at the end of the contract to aid the Department in its evaluation. No decision has yet been taken on any future agreement to support local authorities in tobacco control.</p> more like this
