At the London Syria Conference in 2016, the international community committed to providing quality education to all 1.4 million refugee and vulnerable host community children by the end of the 2016/7 school year. By April 2017, 1 million children were benefitting.

In Lebanon, DFID’s four-year education programme will help 147,000 children enrol in formal education and 100,000 in non-formal education, and improve teaching and learning standards for all children in school. In Jordan, DFID’s four-year education programme helps provide formal education for 193,000 Syrian children. The UK also contributes to the EU Facility for Refugees in Turkey, which has provided access to education for almost half a million Syrian children. In the wider Middle East, the UK funds UNICEF to provide education as part of humanitarian appeals.

The UK has also supported the establishment of a new Education Cannot Wait fund to improve education in crises, with Yemen and Syria each benefitting.

DFID does not fund education provision through radio and TV in the Middle East.

With UN agencies unable to deliver aid cross-border into North East Syria, and medical supplies from Yaroubiya reaching 1.4 million people last year, DFID Ministers and UK Officials are raising this with the UN, and will ask the UN to report regularly on the humanitarian situation in North East Syria. DFID is also speaking with international partners to determine how to meet the immediate shortfall in medical supplies. The UK is committed to supporting UN and NGO partners to have unfettered humanitarian access to all those in need in Syria, across all modalities, and this cannot be time-restricted.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK strongly believes that displaced persons camps in Syria, including Al-Hol, Al Roj and Rukban, should not become permanent, and hope that all Syrians currently living in such camps will be able to return home in due course. We support Syrians’ right to return home voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, in line with international humanitarian law, but only when conditions are right for this to happen.

For many, returns will not be possible without an end to the conflict in Syria. We continue to support the UN-facilitated political process for Syria, which aims to reach a lasting settlement to the conflict that protects the rights of all Syrians. Alongside this, we are also using UK Aid to support those who do wish to return home from IDP camps. For example, we are supporting education, vocational training and job creation, and contributing to the restoration of basic services. However, for the millions of Syrians who do currently remain in IDP camps across Syria, we continue to provide life-saving assistance, including providing essential food, water and sanitation, shelter and healthcare.
