The Rail Network Enhancements Pipeline sets out the process and principles underpinning funding of enhancements to the railway.</p><p> </p><p>Subject a satisfactory business case, and the agreement of acceptable terms with the Heathrow aviation industry, funding would be made available to take the project forward to the ‘Design’ gateway. These improvements have been delivered without any significant impact on freight services. Delivery of further improvements to journey times will be subject to funding and rail industry planning and investment processes, which the freight operators will be party to. Network Rail is undertaking the Great Eastern Mainline Study which focuses on the long-term capacity need on this important route, with input from key stakeholders. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/06/2019 answer text <p>There are currently no plans to further extend electrification on the Midland Main Line (MML), beyond those works planned by the MML enhancements programme and HS2 Phase 2b.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is committed to a greener, cleaner transport system, and recognises the important role this will play in reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. That’s why we are modernising the UK rail fleet to introduce more electric, bi-mode (electric and diesel hybrid) and alternative-fuel trains to the network. The new bi-mode intercity trains for the Midland Main Line will have less environmental impact than the current trains, some of which are over 30 years old. Our ambition is that these will be the cleanest ever bi-mode trains.</p><p> </p><p>Abellio, who have recently been awarded the new East Midlands Railway franchise will be at the forefront of delivering a cleaner, greener rail network. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/07/2019 answer text <p>When the decision not to proceed with electrification from Kettering to Sheffield and Nottingham was taken in 2017, approximately £30m had been spent on preliminary works north of Kettering. The majority of this was on bridge improvement works, which will deliver benefits such as improved asset condition irrespective of any electrification. The indicative c.£1.0bn (in 2012/13 prices) cost estimate for electrifying the route from Kettering to Sheffield / Nottingham was developed by Network Rail in 2016, as part of the Midland Main Line enhancements programme.</p><p> </p><p>Thanks to modern technology, we no longer need to electrify every part of every line in order to deliver better journeys. The decision not to continue with electrification from Kettering to Sheffield and Nottingham means that passengers will benefit from new trains sooner and with less disruption, when compared with electrifying the entire line. The upgrade of the Midland Main Line will support better journeys from 2020, including faster journeys in the peak and more seats, with further improvements from 2022 with a fleet of brand new bi-mode trains.
