star this property answer text <p>Spending on cycling in England has risen from around £2 per person in 2010 to an estimate of around £6 per person in 2016/17. Precise amounts vary from one part of the country to another and depend on decisions made by local authorities and other local bodies.</p><p> </p><p>The amount of spending per head in each of the next five future years will depend on local decisions as well as on future decisions on Government funding. The total amount of investment in walking and cycling in England over the five-year period (2016/17 - 2020/21) is currently set at around £1.2 billion. The money comes from a wide range of ring-fenced and non-ring-fenced funding streams, as set out in the Government’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy which was published in April 2017 and is available at:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycling-and-walking-investment-strategy" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycling-and-walking-investment-strategy</a></p>

star this property answer text <p>Network Rail is delivering the Great Western Electrification Programme to the dates set out in the latest publication of their Enhancement Delivery plan. star this property answer text <p>The Road Investment Strategy provided funding for Highways England to address historic noise issues on the Strategic Road Network with a target to improve 1150 Noise Important Areas by 2020. Highways England does not routinely undertake noise monitoring but instead uses the noise contours and results provided by DEFRA’s noise modelling. Noise data is published on the DEFRA website at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/open-data-strategic-noise-mapping" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/open-data-strategic-noise-mapping</a>. star this property answer text <p>The Department has published guidance for local authorities and practitioners on designing shared space schemes in Local Transport Note 1/11: Shared Space.</p><p> </p><p>To inform the advice given in the Local Transport Note, the Department commissioned an extensive research project in 2010, more information on which can be found at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shared-space" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shared-space</a>. This included qualitative research with a number of different road user types: visually impaired pedestrians; mobility impaired pedestrians; pedestrians with learning difficulties; pedestrians who are deaf or hard of hearing; non-disabled pedestrians; and drivers.</p><p> </p><p>We have been working with the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, which has been carrying out a review of 12 shared space and other street design schemes. This will report soon, and provide recommendations for further work in this area.</p><p> </p><p>The draft Accessibility Action Plan, currently out for consultation, includes an action for us to consider CIHT’s recommendations, when received, and how to take them forward, by the end of 2017.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department for Transport (DfT) has been working closely with the railway industry to reduce emissions from diesel trains, including freight services. All new diesel trains are fitted with engines that meet stringent emission limits set by the EU Non-road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) directive. As older rolling stock comes to the end of its working life, new engines are now being introduced that are fully compliant with these standards.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The key issue for a new direct train service between Oxford and Bristol is the lack of spare track capacity. Enhancements to the route to enable additional train services would need to be considered alongside other rail infrastructure upgrades in England and Wales.</p><p> </p><p>On 12 October 2017 the Transport Secretary set out the final Statement of Funds Available for the railway in England and Wales for Control Period 6, which covers the years 2019 to 2024.</p><p> </p><p>The Department needs to ensure investment best addresses the needs of passengers and freight, and that funding commitments appropriately reflect the stage of development of those enhancements. This is why there will be a new process for enhancements, building on the principles set out in the ‘Memorandum of Understanding between Department for Transport and Network Rail on rail enhancements’ last year.
