star this property answer text

The effect on seafarer employment of the UK Ship Register’s decisions to expand its criteria for shipowner eligibility could be positive and should provide employment opportunities for UK Nationals as more ships would be UK registered, likewise bareboat charter-out is regarding vessel ownership and does not have an adverse impact on seafarer employment opportunities.

The effect on the maritime cluster in the UK of the UK Ship Register’s decisions to expand its criteria for shipowner eligibility could have a positive impact on maritime clusters within the UK as there is potential for more ships to visit the UK. There would also be an increase in revenue for the UK Flag which would be positive to UK PLC.

For bareboat charter-out, there would be an impact in that the ship is suspended from the UK Flag and therefore revenue is impacted but only for the time that the vessel is chartered out. When the vessel returns to the UK Flag, revenue would increase as the vessel does not leave the UK Flag which has previously been the case.

star this property answer text
Acting upon advice from the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the Government broadened the skills threshold of the Skilled Worker route and introduced a lower salary threshold which – as modelling by the MAC suggests – strikes a reasonable balance between access to labour and controlling immigration.

Eligible offshore occupations under the Skilled Worker route include engineers, engine room attendants; ferryman; merchant seaman and seaman. Firms can hire overseas workers to fill these roles provided salary and English language requirements are met.

Furthermore, recognising the important role Deckhands play in the sector, the Government accepted the MAC’s recommendation to add the occupation (for vessels over 9m and for individuals to have at least 3 year’s experience in using their skills) to the Shortage Occupation List.

Importantly, the Skilled Worker route offers a flexible approach, by having no minimum length of required stay under the visa; workers can leave and re-enter the UK without interrupting the validity of their visa.

star this property answer text
Ahead of a potential exit on 29 March, DfT worked with a number of Departments to develop planning assumptions for a potential no deal exit. Since April, Departments have reviewed the planning assumptions and developed new assumptions based on the most recent information from Member States and in light of the extension to 31 October 2019. These assumptions are focused on a reasonable worst case scenario, rather than what we expect to happen, and have already been shared with key partners to support revision of contingency plans, where appropriate, for a potential no deal scenario on 31 October. These planning assumptions remain under review throughout the planning process. The Government does not publish sensitive risk assessments of this nature.
more like this
