This includes modernising the estate and building new accommodation.

We will modernise the prison estate, closing older prisons that are not fit for purpose and creating in their place high-quality, rehabilitative establishments. We have started to redevelop the prisons at Glen Parva (Leicestershire) and Wellingborough (Northamptonshire). We are building a new houseblock at Stocken prison (Rutland). Additionally, we plan to build four modern prisons which includes the development of sites at Full Sutton (East Yorkshire), Hindley (Greater Manchester), Rochester (Kent) and Port Talbot (Neath Port Talbot, South Wales).

The Verne, a former HM Prison and Probation Service operated immigration removal centre in Dorset, will be reopening as a prison as early as possible this year and is expected to house 580 offenders.

unstar this property answer text
The UK was the first country to implement the UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights (the Ruggie Principles), by producing a National Action Plan on business and human rights in September 2013 (updated in May 2016). Through our National Action Plan, we are working with countries, including Sudan, to tackle human rights challenges.

Human rights is a top priority for our engagement with the Government of Sudan. As part of this engagement, the UK will consider opportunities to promote trade with Sudan, as trade can help to open closed off political and economic systems. We continue to press the Government of Sudan to improve the human rights situation to create a more conducive business environment. We used the fourth round of the UK-Sudan Strategic Dialogue on 16 October to agree steps that the Government of Sudan would take to make further progress on human rights, and to raise our concerns on specific human rights issues. A communiqué outlining the progress made is now available on the British Government's website.

Where the issues highlighted are to do with Carillion performance these concerns have fed in through either the performance reviews held regularly at site or if necessary escalated through meetings with senior leaders from both organisations. In some instances, the concerns when investigated have related to the requirement for investment in assets which is not a responsibility of the maintenance contractors, but is managed through the internal asset investment process which decides how limited funds can be allocated to operational and maintenance priorities.
more like this
