star this property answer text <p>At the request of the Department for Transport, the Law Commission conducted a comprehensive review of private hire vehicle and taxi regulation in England and Wales. The ability to sub-contract private hire work across licensing authority boundaries was a recommendation of the Law Commission. Section 11 of the Deregulation Act 2015 enabled this and has allowed private hire operators to work more flexibly to meet the needs of their passengers.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is currently considering the remaining recommendations in the report, against the background of a rapidly changing industry. We will formally respond to the Law Commission and announce our intentions once that scrutiny is completed.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Whilst HS2 Ltd. does not directly buy steel it does apply a strategic and transparent approach to the sourcing of steel for the HS2 Programme through its Tier 1 contractors and their supply chains. HS2 Ltd ensures a fair procurement process which complies with UK procurement law and the Government policy on the procurement of steel.</p><p> </p><p>HS2 Ltd wants UK steel companies to be able to compete on a level playing field when bidding for public procurement opportunities.</p><p> </p><p>All the successful bidders for the recently announced Main Works contracts have confirmed they will comply with contractual requirements to tender their contracts in an open and transparent manner. These main suppliers have already commenced discussions direct with the British Constructional Steel Association and have articulated a desire to work together collaboratively on steel sourcing. To maximise British involvement in these supply chain opportunities HS2 Ltd has engaged extensively with businesses of all sizes from a diverse range of sectors and across the UK and will continue to do so.</p><p> </p><p>The Secretary of State has said that he expects to match the existing record of 95% of steel in rail being UK steel.</p>

star this property answer text <p>As part of the Great North Rail Project, the Hope Valley and Dore capacity schemes will increase track capacity to allow a more frequent service, accommodating three fast trains an hour between Manchester and Sheffield. This scheme is currently subject to a Transport and Works Act Order application, to which the Department is currently considering.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Government is fully committed to Northern Powerhouse Rail, which aims to dramatically improve connections between major cities across the North of England. star this property answer text <p>The initial phase of work carried out by Highways England and Transport for the North, which sought to understand the cost and benefits of linking Manchester and Sheffield via a tunnel, found that while a long tunnel under the Peak District National Park was technically feasible, it was unaffordable and offered poor value for money. Further work is under way to examine the strategic, economic and environmental case for a shorter tunnel under the most environmentally sensitive areas of the National Park.
