	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 04/03/2015 answer text <p>Tower Hamlets is one of 30 Prevent priority areas, identified through a prioritisation process which assesses information from police, local authorities and others. Each priority area receives funding for a Prevent coordinator, and is supported by the Home Office to develop delivery plans relating to Prevent objectives.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Local Prevent co-ordinators work with partners in their areas, including schools, for example by training frontline staff in tackling extremism and identifying people at risk. The local police also provide support.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Department for Education also works with individual schools where concerns arise. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/03/2015 answer text <p>The Prevent programme is a strand of CONTEST – the UK’s strategy for countering extremism – aimed at stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism and extremism. Schools are important to the Prevent strategy both in order to reduce risks of radicalisation, and because schools should be safe spaces where children and young people can challenge and discuss ideas around extremism. Training and information for schools is provided mainly through local Prevent networks, funded by the Home Office, and by the local police, who are best placed to work with schools and to provide support tailored to their particular circumstances. The support available includes trained experts who can deliver training and information in schools.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Since the publication of the Prevent strategy over 130,000 public sector workers, including school staff, have been trained on tackling extremism and identifying people at risk. In 2010 the Department for Education set up the first preventing extremism unit in Whitehall outside the Home Office. Ofsted now trains inspectors to understand and report on extremism. The Department has published a range of guidance to support schools in raising awareness of the risks from extremism.</p><p> </p><p>Schools can help protect children from extremist and violent views in the same ways that they help to safeguard children from drugs, gang violence or alcohol abuse. Schools' work on Prevent needs to be seen in this context. It is for local authorities to determine how best to support schools in their areas in the light of local circumstances.</p><p> </p><p>A number of local Prevent projects, funded by Home Office, engage schools and supplementary schools and train teachers in priority areas. The Department for Education and Home Office are working together to secure the best practical outcome from this funding. There is no place for extremist views in any school. A dedicated counter-extremism unit was established within the Department for Education in 2010 and has responsibility for implementing the commitments in the Prevent strategy. The Secretary of State’s statement to the House on 22 July, in response to Peter Clarke’s report into allegations about schools in Birmingham, set out the latest steps that the Government is taking to increase the resilience of schools to extremism, and the Secretary of State will be making a further statement to the House on this subject shortly.</p><p>Publicly-funded schools remain under a statutory duty to promote community cohesion and have an important part to play in supporting the creation of more integrated communities. This duty is complemented and reinforced by the requirements on schools to encourage respect for the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs. The Department has consulted on strengthening the independent schools standards, which apply to academies and free schools, to require schools to actively promote these values.
