star this property answer text <p>The Government publishes an annual report which describes recent developments in the terrorist threat to the UK and its interests, and the progress made in our counter-terrorism work. This includes high-level information about the contribution of different Government departments to the implementation of the Prevent strategy.</p><p>The Secretary of State's statement to the House on 22 July, in response to Peter Clarke's report into allegations about schools in Birmingham, set out the latest steps that the Government is taking to increase the resilience of schools to extremism.</p><p>The Secretary of State is still considering the best format to update the House on delivery of the Department’s commitments, and will report in due course.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Statutory assessments at Key Stages 1 and 2 are an essential part of ensuring that children master the basics of reading, writing and mathematics which are key to succeeding at secondary school and in later life. They help teachers understand how their pupils are performing against national expectations and enable them to identify where extra support may be needed. Statutory assessments also allows schools to be held to high standards and ensures that they offer a high quality education to all pupils. National curriculum tests undergo a robust three-year development process, taking account of pupils’ experiences of the tests through large-scale representative trialling and review by teachers, head teachers and assessment and inclusion experts.</p><p>Statutory assessments are not meant to cause stress and anxiety to pupils. Schools should encourage all pupils to work hard and achieve well. The Department trusts teachers to administer them in a proportionate way that does not put undue pressure on pupils, and certainly not at the expense of their wellbeing. Schools should provide continuous and appropriate support as part of a whole school approach to supporting the wellbeing and resilience of pupils. The Department encourages schools to ensure that any pupil experiencing high levels of stress speaks to their teachers or school counsellors.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Prevent programme is a strand of CONTEST – the UK’s strategy for countering extremism – aimed at stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism and extremism. The Government publishes an annual report on CONTEST which describes recent developments in the terrorist threat to the UK and its interests, and the progress made in our counter-terrorism work. This includes high-level information about the contribution of different Government departments to the implementation of the Prevent Strategy. The most recent report is available at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/contest-annual-report-2013" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/contest-annual-report-2013</a>.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Department for Education established a dedicated unit to lead work on the commitments set out in the Prevent strategy. This work has focussed on putting in place due diligence arrangements and strengthening regulatory frameworks to reduce the risk of children and young people being exposed to extremist views and to increase their resilience to extremism and radicalisation. The Secretary of State made a statement to the House on 29 January on the progress the Department is making to implement the recommendations contained in Peter Clarke’s report on Birmingham schools, and this gives details of a number of steps the Department has taken to tackle extremism in schools. star this property answer text <p>Tower Hamlets is one of 30 Prevent priority areas, identified through a prioritisation process which assesses information from police, local authorities and others. Each priority area receives funding for a Prevent coordinator, and is supported by the Home Office to develop delivery plans relating to Prevent objectives.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Local Prevent co-ordinators work with partners in their areas, including schools, for example by training frontline staff in tackling extremism and identifying people at risk. The local police also provide support.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Department for Education also works with individual schools where concerns arise. Following recent reports of pupils from Bethnal Green Academy travelling to Syria, the Department is providing support to the school through the Regional Schools Commissioner, in addition to the support being provided by the local authority and police in particular. <strong><br> </strong></p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>There are nationally 3,704 Teach First participants who started since 2009/10 and are still teaching in schools today. This includes 1,338 who have completed the programme and 2,366 currently training in England.</p><p> </p><p>Teach First started placing trainees in Hull in 2011. Since then 28 trainees have completed the programme in the Kingston upon Hull local area. 19 of those teachers are still teaching, with 13 still in Kingston upon Hull local authority.</p><p> </p><p>Nationally, 1,387 participants started the Teach First programme in June 2014.</p><p> </p><p>Out of the 2014 trainee cohort, 11 are currently training in Kingston upon Hull local authority across five schools:</p><p> </p><ol><li>Archbishop Sentamu Academy (2)</li><li>Kingswood Academy (3)</li><li>Sirius Academy (2)</li><li>Winifred Holtby Academy (2)</li><li>Thomas Ferens Academy (2)</li></ol><p> </p> more like this

Schools are important to the Prevent strategy both in order to reduce risks of radicalisation, and because schools should be safe spaces where children and young people can challenge and discuss ideas around extremism. Training and information for schools is provided mainly through local Prevent networks, funded by the Home Office, and by the local police, who are best placed to work with schools and to provide support tailored to their particular circumstances. The support available includes trained experts who can deliver training and information in schools.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Since the publication of the Prevent strategy over 130,000 public sector workers, including school staff, have been trained on tackling extremism and identifying people at risk. Schools have access to a wide range of products to help them build pupils’ resilience to extremism and radicalisation.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department for Education set up a dedicated unit, the Due Diligence and Counter Extremism Group, now a director-led group, to lead its contribution to the Prevent strategy, in particular by working to reduce the risk of unsuitable individuals and organisations from gaining influence over schools and strengthening regulatory frameworks.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Department has carried out due diligence checks to establish the suitability of individuals and organisations seeking to become involved in schools and in other activity involving children and young people. Work on strengthening regulatory frameworks includes, but is not limited to, amending the standards applying to institutions, teachers and governors to require them to conduct themselves in a way which is compatible with fundamental British values and enabling the Secretary of State and others to take action where they fail to do so. Ofsted has strengthened the school inspections handbook so that inspectors take account of how well schools promote fundamental British values, and protect pupils from the risks of extremism and radicalisation, when judging their effectiveness.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>A number of local Prevent projects, funded by the Home Office, engage schools and supplementary schools and train teachers in priority areas. The Home Office has established a monitoring framework to evaluate the local delivery of Prevent project funding to local authorities. The process for allocating funds requires projects to be evidence-based with clear steps to evaluate activity. The Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism (OSCT) collates the evidence from projects it funds in order to evaluate consistently across similar projects.</p><p> </p>
