star this property answer text <p>Offences of using poison or instruments to cause miscarriage and supplying or procuring poison or instruments to cause miscarriage (sections 58 and 59 Offences Against the Persons Act 1861) are usually investigated by the police and, in England and Wales, prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).</p><p>The CPS will only bring or continue with a prosecution where both stages of the test set down in the Code for Crown Prosecutors are met, i.e. that there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction and, if so, that a prosecution is required in the public interest.</p><p>In England and Wales, section 1 of the Abortion Act 1967 provides a defence to a prosecution under sections 58 or 59 where a pregnancy is terminated by a registered medical practitioner in accordance with the provisions of the Abortion Act 1967.</p> more like this

Information on the average time between the two medical practitioners' signatures is also not collected centrally.</p><p> </p><p>Because of the way information is stored the number of places where abortions took place in England and Wales is only available from 2013 to 2015 and is shown in the table below. Clinical commissioning groups are responsible for ensuring the appropriate provision of abortion services in their area based upon the needs of the resident population.</p><p> </p><p>NHS hospitals do not require approval from the Secretary of State for Health to provide abortion services. The information requested for approved independent sector abortion premises is provided in the following table:</p><table><tbody><tr><td><p>Type of termination of pregnancy service</p></td><td><p>Number of approved independent sector premises</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Surgical abortions only</p></td><td><p>6</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Medical abortions only</p></td><td><p>107</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Both surgical and medical abortions</p></td><td><p>55</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>The Department has made no estimate of the number of illegal abortions before 24 weeks gestation. Abortion procured outside the criteria set by the Abortion Act 1967 is a criminal offence. Police forces and the Crown Prosecution Service are responsible for investigating and bringing prosecutions in cases of suspected illegal abortion.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Secretary of State for Health approves independent sector providers to perform abortions and all providers must agree to comply with the Department’s Required Standard Operating Procedures (RSOPs). Under the RSOPs set:</p><p> </p><p>- Women should be offered an appointment within five working days of referral or self-referral;</p><p> </p><p>- Women should be offered the abortion procedure within five working days of the decision to proceed; and</p><p> </p><p>- The total time from access to procedure should not exceed ten working days.</p><p> </p><p>These good practice standards are in line with clinical guidance from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.</p><p> </p><p>Women can choose to delay appointments/booked procedures and this should always override issues of timeliness.</p> more like this
