Friend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in his Spring Statement on 13 March 2019 that the Department for Education will lead a scheme to provide access to free sanitary products in all secondary schools and colleges across England. On 16 April 2019, I announced that funding would be extended to cover need in primary schools and that national roll-out would take place in early 2020.</p><p>The department published an Invitation to Tender for the Period Products scheme on 15 June 2019, and we intend to award this contract in Autumn 2019. The consortium brings together significant expertise on the mental health of looked-after children, including Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC), and will work closely with selected sites to use their own learning and expertise to inform the project. The assessment framework will be tailored to the specific groups of looked-after children that each pilot site chooses to focus on which, for some sites, will be UASC.</p><p> </p><p>The pilots will also draw on the recommendations made by the Expert Working Group, which was commissioned by Department for Education and Department for Health and Social Care. The Expert Working Group found that the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) should be supported by a broader set of measures. The pilots will therefore use the SDQ alongside other assessment tools.</p><p> </p><p>We will be conducting a full evaluation of the pilots. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/11/2018 answer text <p>Statutory assessments at Key Stages 1 and 2 are an essential part of ensuring that children master the basics of reading, writing and mathematics which are key to succeeding at secondary school and in later life. They help teachers understand how their pupils are performing against national expectations and enable them to identify where extra support may be needed. Statutory assessments also allows schools to be held to high standards and ensures that they offer a high quality education to all pupils. National curriculum tests undergo a robust three-year development process, taking account of pupils’ experiences of the tests through large-scale representative trialling and review by teachers, head teachers and assessment and inclusion experts.</p><p>Statutory assessments are not meant to cause stress and anxiety to pupils. Schools should encourage all pupils to work hard and achieve well. The Department trusts teachers to administer them in a proportionate way that does not put undue pressure on pupils, and certainly not at the expense of their wellbeing. Schools should provide continuous and appropriate support as part of a whole school approach to supporting the wellbeing and resilience of pupils. Sixth form colleges’ pay and terms and conditions are agreed separately through the National Joint Council for Staff in Sixth Form Colleges.</p><p> </p><p>The government has never taken steps to cap the pay of teachers in sixth form colleges, as these are private and independent institutions. Further education colleges are independent institutions and the government has no current plans to allocate funding specifically to assist with the increase of teachers’ remuneration in non-academised sixth form colleges. However we are considering the overall needs of these institutions as part of our work on the efficiency and resilience of the further education sector.
