	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/07/2018 answer text <p>The Government recognises the need to support local communities in adapting to changes in the banking landscape, and is committed to improving access to financial services across both traditional and digital channels.</p><p> </p><p>The independent financial services regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has recently released a series of publications exploring the needs of elderly and vulnerable consumers. In September 2017, the FCA published its Ageing Population Occasional Paper, which reviewed the policy implications of an ageing population and the resulting impact on financial services. In October 2017, the FCA also published its ‘Financial Lives Survey’, the first in a series of annual large scale surveys (13,000 interviews). This survey is designed to add a substantial new source of data to the regulator’s understanding of consumers in the retail financial markets. Equivalent estimates for later years are not readily available, but an estimate for 2015/16 will be available in Autumn 2018.</p><p> </p><p>These estimates include Self-Assessment Income Tax and Class 4 National Insurance Contributions (NICs), Corporation Tax, VAT, and Pay As You Earn Income Tax and Class 1 NICs. At a local level, engagement generally takes place through the LAA’s local contract management team, although wider strategic concerns can also be raised by the profession’s representative groups through the regular engagement meetings the LAA holds with those organisations. The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) monitors capacity across criminal legal aid contracts on a regular basis and takes action to ensure there is ongoing availability of criminal legal advice for the public. Last year £891 million was spent on criminal legal aid so that those who most need legal support are able to get it.</p><p> </p><p>The Ministry of Justice, the LAA and Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service are working with representatives from solicitors’ and barristers’ groups as they look to evolve the way that courts are operating moving forward. This involves looking at options on working more digitally and an increased utilisation of virtual facilities. We are taking urgent action to make prisons safer, and assaults on our staff will never be tolerated. That is why we are working with the Police and Crown Prosecution Service to ensure successful prosecutions of those who assault them. It is also why the Government supported the recently passed Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act, which increases sentences for those who attack emergency workers, including prison officers.</p><p> </p><p>We are taking further measures to protect our staff, including investing in 5,600 body-worn cameras and in rigid-bar handcuffs. Early next year we will begin to equip every prison officer in the adult male prison estate with PAVA incapacitant spray. PAVA can help to prevent serious harm to staff and prisoners alike, as well as being a tool to persuade prisoners in the act of violence to stop.
