star this property answer text
We have invested £43 million in the 2021-22 financial year to deliver Skills Bootcamps across the country, covering a wide range of digital, technical and green skills. And we are going further with the investment announced at the Autumn Budget and Spending Review 2021 to significantly expand this exciting training programme.

Skills Bootcamps funding for this financial year has been allocated to providers across the country. This has included through a competitive procurement process, where the highest quality bids across all nine geographical regions in England were awarded contracts, selected according to demonstrated local skills needs.

More information about availability of specific Skills Bootcamps courses, including the recently announced Skills Bootcamps in HGV driving, is regularly updated on the Free Courses for Jobs website on GOV.UK.

For instance, Gateshead College has Skills Bootcamps in skill areas including cyber security, data engineering and digital marketing. We are pleased that initial findings indicate that this training has been well received and is already preparing adults to take on new, skilled jobs. Outcomes data from Wave 1 Skills Bootcamps, which will be published later this month, will give a full breakdown of the outcomes that our training has achieved to date.

We are confident that Skills Bootcamps have the potential to transform the adult skills landscape and are pleased that the positive outcome of the Spending Review means that we can go further with this training model, ensuring thousands of adults learn new skills and move into better jobs. The three-year settlement for this spending period should also give providers and employers greater confidence in delivering this style of training, allowing them to better plan new skills provision in their area.

These entitlements are based on new national standards, which set out the digital skills that people need in life and in work.

We have introduced skills bootcamps, which will provide flexible training for in-demand areas including software development, digital marketing, and data analytics, and a fast-track to an interview with a local employer. Our free courses for jobs offer supports eligible adults to access over 400 fully funded level 3 courses, including digital qualifications in areas such as cyber security, coding, network architecture, and systems support.

There are now 25 digital apprenticeships, from level 3 to degree apprenticeship, covering a range of roles including cyber security, software development and artificial intelligence (AI), providing the digital skills training in the workplace that individuals and employers need. Last year the first AI data specialist apprenticeship standard was approved for delivery at level 7. This highly skilled role champions AI, its applications and promotes the adoption of novel tools and technologies.

At levels 4 and 5, the first approved higher technical qualifications in digital occupations, such as cyber security technologist, will be ready for first teaching from September 2022.

For 16-19 year olds, digital T Levels offer a prestigious, high-quality technical option at level 3, supporting progression to occupations such as software development technician. It is not just occupations in the digital sector where good digital skills are needed, and relevant digital skills are built into every T Level qualification.

English higher education providers are autonomous institutions, which means that they have the freedom to determine the content of courses and the way their courses are taught, supervised, and assessed.

Last year, the former Secretary of State for Education, my right hon. Friend for South Staffordshire, formally commissioned Sir Michael Barber in his capacity as Chair of the Office for Students, to lead a review following the rapid shift toward digital teaching and learning in higher education since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. The report, which was published on 25 February, builds on lessons learned through the COVID-19 outbreak and sets out recommendations to seize opportunities for the medium to long-term future. The report included a series of recommendations for higher education providers outlining what a successful approach to building digital skills looks like, with practical suggestions for action.

Through the department’s employer engagement teams, we are engaging directly with employers of all sizes, including SMEs, to explain the benefits of T Levels and of industry hosting placements, and to help provide a strong pipeline of employers, across all sectors, that are ready to offer placements.

We are providing an extensive programme of support to help ensure employers of all sizes can deliver placements. This includes a comprehensive employer support package, offering guidance, workshops, webinars, tailored advice, and hands-on support to help build employer confidence and capability in delivering high quality industry placements. We have also implemented several different delivery models to ensure placements can be delivered by employers of different sizes, across all industries and locations, and our T Level Ambassador Network is enabling employers, including SMEs, to engage with others in their industries on T Levels and placements. Finally, we have put in place a short-term incentive fund, offering employers £1,000 per industry placement, to encourage employer engagement during the COVID-19 outbreak. This has been warmly welcomed by SMEs.

We will continue to monitor the delivery of placements and work closely with employers, including SMEs, to identify what support they will need going forward to deliver high-quality placements.
