The Minister for Europe and the Americas made several public statements last year calling for the release or fair trial of dozens of political prisoners held by Russian authorities, including historian Oyub Titiev in Chechnya and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov in Ukraine. The interests of the Russian people would be best served by a political system based on strong institutions, such as an independent judiciary and a free press, together with a safe political space for dissenting views to be heard and free and fair elections.

more like this

On Monday 19 November, the UK circulated a draft UN Security Resolution. We are discussing with our partners on the Security Council how best to take this forward. We have a window of opportunity in the political process in which to work for the best solution for the people of Yemen and support the efforts of the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths towards planned talks in Stockholm this week.
more like this

star this property answer text
The US Government regularly lobbies the Government of South Sudan to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of Christopher Allen in August 2017, and UK officials in Juba remain in close contact with their US counterparts to support these efforts. Mr Allen's family have not contacted UK officials seeking independent action by the UK.

The Government of South Sudan is responsible for grave human rights violations committed by its own forces, and has failed to meet its obligations to protect its citizens, allowing a culture of impunity to persist. Parties to the conflict deliberately target and kill civilians in the knowledge that their crimes will go unpunished. Journalists and aid workers are also targeted with impunity. The targeting of those like Mr Allen who are reporting on the crisis or delivering aid is barbaric and must cease immediately.
more like this
