star this property answer text
President Ouattara has registered to stand as his party's candidate in Côte d'Ivoire's forthcoming presidential election. The Independent Electoral Commission in Côte d'Ivoire is responsible for reviewing the eligibility of candidates alongside the Constitutional Council. The final list of eligible candidates will be published later this month.

We believe long term peace and stability in Côte d'Ivoire can best be achieved through peaceful, free and credible elections, in line with international law, and encourage all parties to work towards this goal. We urge all parties to participate responsibly, engage fully in the process, avoid the use of inflammatory language, and denounce violence and hate speech. To support these aims, our Embassy in Abidjan is supporting security forces' training focused on ensuring public security during the election period is maintained, including respect for human rights. We are following developments closely and expect elections to be conducted transparently, following due process before and during the poll in October.

On 30 June, the UK read out a formal statement on behalf of 28 countries at the 44th session of the UN Human Rights Council highlighting arbitrary detention, widespread surveillance and restrictions, particularly those targeting Uyghurs and other minorities, and urging China to allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights meaningful access to Xinjiang. We will continue to raise our concerns with China bilaterally, and through the UN working with international partners.

star this property answer text
We do not currently believe that sanctions are the most effective instrument to resolve tensions between Turkey and Greece. Any EU listings decisions are a matter for EU member states. The UK will pursue an independent sanctions policy at the end of the Transition Period. We will look to carry over existing EU sanctions into domestic law wherever it helps to further the UK's foreign policy objectives. The transfer of each EU sanctions regime into UK law will be considered on a case by case basis, and designations transferred into UK autonomous sanctions regimes at the end of the Transition Period will be subject to a final ministerial decision-making process.

We believe it is critical for stability in the Mediterranean and for the integrity of the rules-based international system that disputes such as this are resolved, not through force, militarisation or coercion, but through dialogue and in accordance with international law. We will continue to work with the wider region to that end.
