star this property answer text <p>DSIT is responsible for the majority of the Government’s spending on R&amp;D, including UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) budget of £25.1 billion across the current Spending Review (FY2022/23 – 2024/25). This includes an allocation of over £8.8 billion in financial year 2024/25.</p><p> </p><p>As outlined by the Chancellor at Spring Budget 2024, the next Spending Review to set future financial year budgets will be held after the General Election.</p><p> </p><p>DSIT has budgets and plans in place until at least April 2025. Government will agree departmental budgets for financial years following this as part of the usual budget setting process.</p> more like this

Research papers are a key means of communicating the results of research and innovation activities contributing to the body of knowledge across different research areas.</p><p> </p><p>Every £1 of public R&amp;D funding leverages around £2 of additional private sector investment. The UK is a leader in science and research. With less than one per cent of the world’s population, the UK accounts for 6.3% of the world’s academic publications, and 13.4% of the most highly cited research publications.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As the independent regulator for the telecoms industry, Ofcom plays an essential role in maintaining regulatory oversight, promoting best practice and liaising with government to provide the best outcomes possible for the consumer. The regulator undertakes regular reviews of regulation, and it concluded its Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review in 2021, setting out broadband regulation for the 2021-2026 period. It also assessed its approach to mobile markets in its Mobile Strategy Review in 2022.</p><p>The Government published its Statement of Strategic Priorities in 2019 to ensure Ofcom’s regulation is aligned with our objectives, including our commitments to world-class digital infrastructure, promoting competition, and to safeguarding the interests of telecoms consumers.</p><p>A consultation on ‘Strengthening economic regulation in the water, energy and telecoms sectors’ concluded in January this year and we are currently considering responses related to the telecoms sector.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The UK has strong measures in place to address IP crime and infringement, co-ordinated by the Intellectual Property Office. It works with the Police IP Crime Unit, Trading Standards, and Regional Organised Crime Units among others to tackle the sale of fake designer goods. Wilful trade mark counterfeiting and copyright piracy on a commercial scale are criminal offences and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 provides powers to seize assets derived from such criminal activity. A recent operation between IPO, City of London Police, Trading Standards and industry representatives at Camden High Street resulted in the seizure of fake designer bracelets worth £400,000.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Government’s approach is to actively support and fund the development and dissemination of techniques that replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in research (the 3Rs), primarily through funding from UK Research and Innovation for the National Centre for the 3Rs (NC3Rs) - who have committed £31.6 million for research and innovation into replacement technologies in the past 5 years - and to ensure that the UK has a robust regulatory system for licensing animal studies.</p><p> </p><p>The NC3Rs are on track to meet their commitment to invest 75% of their research and innovation budget on replacement technologies by the end of 2024.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government has raised support for research commercialisation to its highest level ever. For example, the Higher Education Innovation Fund, supporting knowledge exchange between universities and the wider world, is £280m for academic year 2022-23, including £20m for commercialisation, and spinouts can access financial support like Innovate UK Smart Grants.</p><p> </p><p>The Government also helps businesses take advantage of innovation. For example, Innovate UK’s EDGE gives innovative businesses the wrap-around support and leadership and management skills they need to scale up, commercialise, and access new markets.</p><p> </p><p>Barking &amp; Dagenham and Havering received £1.08m of UKRI spend in 2020-21, supporting research, development and innovation.</p> more like this
