unstar this property answer text In 2013, the Government of Pitcairn and Her Majesty's Government commissioned two independent pieces of analysis. One into the appetite amongst the Pitcairn diaspora for return to the island, and the other on the broader economic potential of the island. Both reports recognised that unless the population of the island increases, it will be a challenge to maintain the longer-term sustainability of Pitcairn. Her Majesty's Government fully supports the economic development of the Pitcairn Islands. The Government of Pitcairn has recently worked up a new Strategic Development Plan and a repopulation plan, and Her Majesty’s Government has given advice on both these documents. The Pitcairn Island Council is currently reconsidering those documents alongside HMG’s advice. We will continue to work in partnership with the Government of Pitcairn to support the community in Pitcairn as we consider longer-term options for the island. Given the acute challenges Pitcairn faces, a new office of Administrator will replace the current role of Governor’s Representative on the island by the end of the year to provide more assistance at this critical stage.

unstar this property answer text
Countering violent extremism in Europe is an important issue on which the British Government maintains a regular, ongoing dialogue with our European partners. For example, we have engaged with the recent revision of the EU’s Strategy for Combating Radicalisation and Recruitment, and welcomed this as an opportunity to enhance the approach of Member States and the EU to countering radicalisation and further challenging extremism in Europe.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
We believe that a genuinely open political process, in which all political groups are able to participate, will lead to long-term stability in Egypt. We are concerned at restrictions on political freedoms, including freedom of expression and association, and the trials of journalists. We are also concerned at reports of the absence of a fair hearing in some recent trials. The UK encourages the Egyptian Government to implement the rights enshrined in Egypt’s constitution.

Prosperity will also be important for Egypt’s long-term stability. We welcome Egyptian Government starting to implement economic reforms. The UK supports the Egyptian people in their aspirations for greater economic opportunities, political participation, freedom and rights.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
We continue to support the Syrian moderate opposition who have previously shown themselves capable of pushing Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) back, and are at the forefront of the fight against them. The only sustainable solution to the crisis in Syria is through reaching a negotiated political transition by mutual consent, which would enable moderate Syrians to come together to counter ISIL, free from the attacks of the regime. We must stick to this fundamental principle, endorsed by the United Nations Security Council. To achieve this we are continuing to put pressure on the Assad regime and its international backers to engage in the political process and we are supporting the moderate opposition who will be a critical component of peace talks. The UK is delivering £30 million of non-lethal support this year to strengthen an inclusive moderate opposition as well as to bolster regional stability.
more like this

unstar this property answer text
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) pose a threat across the region and it is important that our response reflects that. This will require a tough, intelligent and patient approach, including action at home and abroad. In both Iraq and Syria, we are determined to support non-sectarian moderates who are working for democracy and the rule of law, and resist terrorists, extremists and authoritarian regimes. Our approach to dealing with ISIL will involve ensuring that the UK is protected from immediate security threats, that ISIL is pushed back militarily and that we squeeze ISIL’s access to resources, including money, weapons and recruits. We will also work to isolate ISIL politically through finding inclusive political settlements in Iraq and Syria. We are already carrying out surveillance flights in Northern Iraq and have not ruled our further steps.
more like this
