Too many people end up fighting expensive and confrontational court battles when they could be helped to resolve their problems outside the courts. However when people do end up in court it is imperative that they have the right advice and information.</p><p> </p><p>The new package of support which I announced on 23 October is aimed at keeping disputes away from court, while those who end up in court will be provided with better support. The £2m funding identified in the announcement will be used to support the increase of legal and practical support for litigants in person in the civil and family courts. This strategy has been agreed with the legal and advice sectors and we are working with them on implementation.</p><p>The funding will not be used to support improvements to the DWP's Sorting out Separation website. This is because we are already working closely with DWP to improve and refine Sorting out Seperation. The DWP has appointed commercial providers with digital expertise to run the new contract for strategic development and improvement of the online service and to raise its profile for online search. However, the pilot is different because it will test the provision of tailored information and signposting based on a telephone discussion with an experienced Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) professional. The Cafcass professional will signpost separating parents in dispute to sources of information, advice and support appropriate to their circumstances, which could include Sorting out Separation or the Child Maintenance Options online and telephone service, as appropriate.</p><p> </p><p>Additionally, we are working closely with DWP to improve and refine Sorting out Separation. The Justice Secretary has been on a significant number of domestic visits in the 18 months since January 2013. This would require extensive diary searches and work to compile the information. The Justice Secretary and members of the Ministerial team regularly visit courts, prisons and probation trusts and other organisations relevant to the Ministry of Justice’s business. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/07/2014 answer text <p>The First-tier Tribunal (Social Security and Child Support), administered by HM Courts &amp; Tribunals Service (HMCTS), hears appeals against Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) decisions on a range of benefits, including Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>(1) (a) In 2008 the DWP estimated that there would be an extra 21,000 appeals annually as a result of the introduction of ESA. An extra £4m funding from DWP was initially agreed to cover these costs in the period 2009/10. HMCTS does not hold the information on other funding sources for ESA alone.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>(2) The following table shows the estimated cost of ESA appeals to HMCTS in each year since 2008/09 until 2012/13 (the latest period for which data has been published). The estimated costs were calculated by multiplying the average cost of an individual SSCS tribunal case in that year by the number of ESA appeals disposed of during the year. The Tribunal receives funding from the Ministry of Justice through HMCTS, the DWP and the National Insurance Fund from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, as set out in the table below.
