<p>We know from various studies that around 1 in 5 children in the UK will have been
exposed to domestic abuse. In addition, data published by the Office for National
Statistics on childhood experience of abuse shows that children who witness domestic
abuse are more likely to experience domestic abuse as an adult.</p><p>The Queen’s
Speech set out that we would bring forward legislation to protect victims of domestic
abuse, and committed to ensuring that if abusive behaviour involves a child, then
the court can hand down a sentence that reflects the devastating life-long impact
that abuse has on the child.</p>
