star this property answer text <p>Since 2010, the number of women on FTSE 350 boards has more than doubled and we now have the highest ever percentage of women on boards – over 24% in the FTSE 350. We also have only eight all-male boards remaining in the FTSE 350, and none in the FTSE 100. We are supporting the Hampton-Alexander Review to meet their target of women holding 33% of FTSE 100 senior leadership positions and 33% of FTSE 350 board positions. The Hampton-Alexander Review will report on 9 November regarding progress over the last 12 months of women on boards for FTSE 350 companies.</p><p> </p><p>We will continue to work with businesses to highlight the benefits they gain from a more diverse board membership.</p> more like this

We encourage all UK universities to have due regard to the health and safety of their students and staff while abroad, and universities do routinely produce overseas travel safety guidance and resources for their staff and students travelling on university business.</p><p> </p><p>For country-specific travel advice we recommend that universities refer their students and staff to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) website: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice</a>, and the FCO’s foreign travel checklist: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/guidance/foreign-travel-checklist" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/guidance/foreign-travel-checklist</a>. Where the FCO advise against travel to a particular country, many universities require students and staff to be authorised by university offices to undertake work or study placements in that country.</p><p> </p><p>Where university students and staff require assistance while abroad, they are advised to make contact with FCO Consular Services, who provide emergency advice and assistance to British citizens overseas.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Good careers education and guidance should give people access to the information that they need to make informed decisions on education, training and employment options. This includes routes into technical education and apprenticeships. The government’s careers strategy makes clear that all schools are responsible for making sure that their students can access independent careers guidance. We continue to invest in careers provision across England to make sure that all young people are aware while they are still at school of the post-16 opportunities that are available.</p><p>Schools are also legally responsible for making sure that pupils are informed about approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships. We introduced a new law in January 2018 which requires all maintained schools and academies to provide opportunities for a range of education and training providers to meet pupils in year 8 to year 13. This is often referred to as the ‘Baker Clause’ and followed evidence from Ofsted that vocational training and apprenticeships are rarely promoted effectively in schools.</p><p>The department has published statutory guidance on careers guidance and access for education and training providers which explains what schools must do to comply with this law. star this property answer text <p>For the 2018/19 academic year, we will be supporting those in work on low incomes to access the Adult Education Budget (AEB) through the introduction of a new one-year trial which allows providers to fully fund eligible learners on low wages. This will directly support social mobility by enabling those that have been motivated to move out of unemployment and are low paid/skilled, to further progress. Early results suggest that this is attracting new/additional learners and we are reviewing whether it will be extended to cover the 2019/20 academic year.</p><p> </p><p>Community Learning plays a vital role within AEB provision, it provides an accessible way of progressing to further learning, training or employment and is mainly non-formal non-accredited learning which supports access to further adult education, particularly for disadvantaged adult learners.</p><p> </p><p>It is funded in a way that enables providers to meet the needs of disadvantaged learners; for example, by running smaller classes, by responding quickly to local needs, by offering more intensive support, and by holding classes in community venues, such as community centres, schools and libraries. This encourages adult learners, who may not be suited to more formal learning at this point in their lives, to participate in community and family learning and begin their learning journey.</p><p> </p><p>We also provide full funding for learners who need English and Maths skills to undertake a range of courses in GCSEs, Functional Skills and stepping stone qualifications from entry level to level 2. From 2020, selected basic digital skills courses will also be fully funded.</p><p> </p><p>From 2019/20 academic year, approximately 50% of the AEB will be devolved to 6 Mayoral Combined Authorities (MCAs) (Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands, West of England) and delegated to the Greater London Authority (GLA). The MCAs and GLA will be responsible for commissioning and funding AEB provision for learners resident in their areas. However, they must ensure access and funding for the statutory entitlements, including the new digital entitlement, to enable eligible learners to be fully funded. The Education and Skills Funding Agency will be responsible for funding learners resident in non-devolved areas.</p><p> </p><p>We are also introducing the National Retraining Scheme, which is an ambitious, far-reaching programme to drive adult learning and retraining. It will help people respond to changes in the economy and support them to progress in work, redirect their careers and secure the higher-paid, higher-skilled jobs of the future, focusing on those individuals that need it most.</p><p> </p><p>To inform the design of the scheme, the Flexible Learning Fund is supporting 31 pilot projects across England with a total value of £11.4 million. The projects are designing and testing innovative, flexible learning that is easy to access, and the best ways to reach working adults and incentivise them to train.</p><p> </p><p>Apprenticeships benefit people of all ages and backgrounds such as people with children returning to part-time work and needing to re-train. 41% of starts in 2017/18 have been by those aged 25 and over.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The answer provided is the number of learning aims (i.e. courses, programmes, qualifications and units) students have taken in STEM-related further education (FE) sector subject areas.</p><p>Many FE students, especially 16 to 18 year olds, take a single substantive qualification, but the total number of aims will count people more than once if for example; they progress to another course during a year or are undertaking a range of qualifications in different subjects, a proportion of which could be STEM-related.</p><p>The attached table provide the number of aims delivered on STEM-related courses in education and training provision in England for each academic year since 2010/11, and covers all FE providers. star this property answer text <p>We want to make the system easier to navigate for young people considering technical and vocational routes, as we committed to in the government's manifesto. We are still considering the feasibility of a centralised portal for further education. We have conducted extensive research with over 2,000 young people, colleges and career advisers. We will make final decisions on this in the context of our reforms to apprenticeships and the introduction of T levels.</p><p>We have already introduced functionality that allows levy-paying employers to advertise their own vacancies on the apprenticeship service. The Find an Apprenticeship website is accessed by thousands of would-be apprentices, their teachers and parents. Employers that do not pay the levy can continue to advertise their vacancies by contacting the national contact centre or working with their training provider. We will continue to develop this in future, informed by our engagement with employers and their feedback on the service.</p><p>​The National Apprenticeship Service and UCAS have developed a higher and degree apprenticeships ‘vacancy finder’ to consolidate many of these opportunities into one place. In November, we published thousands of vacancies from various employers starting in 2019.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Any form of intolerance or bullying, including antisemitism is unacceptable. Schools must promote our shared values, which includes mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. The department supports schools to implement this requirement through a range of resources, such as those included on the Educate Against Hate website, as well as by working with networks of experts on the ground who provide direct support to schools on this. Every state-funded school, maintained and academy, must also teach religious education to all pupils up to the age of 18.</p><p> </p><p>Schools must comply with the requirements of the Equality Act and must also have a behaviour policy which includes measures to prevent bullying. Recent research commissioned by the department details common strategies that schools have found to be effective for combating bullying.</p><p> </p><p>The department is funding a number of projects to help schools tackle bullying, including hate-related bullying. This includes funding the Anne Frank Trust to develop their ‘Free to Be’ debate programme, which encourages young people to think about the importance of tackling prejudice, discrimination and bullying. We also recently published the ‘Respectful Schools Communities’ toolkit; a self-review and signposting tool to support schools to develop a whole-school approach which promotes respect and discipline.</p><p>The department is fully committed to educating pupils about the Holocaust and is the only topic that is compulsory in the national curriculum for history. We fund the Centre for Holocaust at University College London to train trainee and serving teachers to teach this important subject and to set up a network of Beacon schools to share good practice. We also fund the Holocaust Education Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ programme, which enables teachers and sixth form students to visit Auschwitz.</p><p>Schools can also address intolerance and bullying as part of non-statutory personal, social, health and economic education. We are also making relationships education compulsory in all primary schools and relationships and sex education compulsory in all secondary schools. We have completed a public consultation on draft guidance which is clear that pupils will be taught about the importance of building respectful relationships including, for example, understanding the impact of bullying and how stereotypes can be damaging.</p><p>Subject to making the regulations, schools will be required to teach these new subjects from September 2020, but they will be encouraged and supported to start teaching them from September 2019 on a voluntary basis.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Leaving the EU with a deal remains the government’s top priority. This has not changed.</p><p>The department has published “no deal notices” on GOV.UK[1] to provide information and advice to schools and to further education and higher education institutions.
