star this property answer text
After the July-August 2014 conflict over 100,000 people were made homeless in Gaza and over 3,300 internally displaced people are still sheltering in UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) collective centres. UK aid is saving lives and providing services but we need to see a more sustainable political solution for Gaza which will address Israel’s legitimate security concerns whilst opening up movement and access and supporting the return of the PA.

The UK was one of the biggest donors to the crisis last summer, providing more than £17 million in immediate humanitarian assistance for those caught up in the conflict. The UK subsequently pledged a further £20 million in early recovery assistance at the Gaza Reconstruction Conference in Cairo. We have already disbursed 80% of the pledge and will disburse the remaining this financial year, focussing largely on getting businesses back to work.
more like this

We commend the generosity that Turkey has shown towards those fleeing the conflict in Syria. The UK has allocated £34 million to support Syrian refugees in Turkey, including food, shelter and primary healthcare. The UK is also working in partnership with Turkish institutions on targeted projects to build their capacity to tackle irregular migration. The EU is currently working in partnership with the Turkish government to explore options for increased support to Turkey. The UK is engaged in this process.
more like this

Of this total we have allocated £304 million in Lebanon, £193 million in Jordan, £34 million to Turkey, £19 million to Iraq and the remainder across the region.

We have not earmarked our funding for specific refugee camps across the region. We support a range of partners including the UN and international non-governmental organisations that work both in camps and in host communities to provide a range of support for refugees. This includes shelter, water, healthcare and education. The vast majority of refugees in countries neighbouring Syria live in host communities. There are no formal camps in Lebanon; rather refugees are disbursed across the country in host communities.
more like this

star this property answer text
To date, the UK has allocated £304 million in Lebanon and £193 million in Jordan to support Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities. This allocation has effectively delivered humanitarian and development support where needs are greatest and most unmet across both countries. For example, as of June 2015 in Jordan and Lebanon respectively, 1,684,800 and 2,032,500 food rations have been delivered providing food for one person for one month.

The effectiveness of the UK’s humanitarian response in Jordan and Lebanon is assessed regularly through progress reports from funded agencies monitoring their achievements against plans outlined in their funding agreements. Progress is followed up through regular discussions and periodic field monitoring visits to project sites by DFID staff based in our Embassies in Amman and Beirut and from our headquarters in the UK. In addition, projects are formally reviewed on an annual basis and in some cases we also commission independent evaluations.
