star this property answer text
Unemployment in Huddersfield is at its lowest since 2008. In February the Chancellor laid out his Long-term Economic Plan for Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire – a crucial step in building the Northern Powerhouse. The plan aims to raise the employment rate of Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire so that over 100,000 more people are in employment there during this Parliament. This will be achieved by backing business start-ups and business growth and investment, through projects like the new, Growth-Deal funded, Incubation and Innovation Centre at Huddersfield University which will support jobs growth in the advanced manufacturing and digital and creative sectors.
more like this

star this property answer text
Human rights remain a priority for our engagement on Sudan. Since the removal of President Bashir, and the establishment of a Transitional Military Council, the UK has ensured that the situation in Sudan has been discussed at the highest levels, including at the UN Security Council and EU. We continue to engage with international counterparts across our diplomatic network to coordinate an international response that supports the people of Sudan. The Foreign Secretary spoke with Kenyan Cabinet secretary for Foreign Affairs on 3 May and Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on 25 April on the importance of international partners’ engagement to support a swift transition to civilian rule. In addition, we have ongoing discussions with our Troika partners (US and Norway), collectively calling for a transition that is inclusive and respectful of human rights and the rule of law. We also continue to maintain pressure on the Sudanese authorities to respect the Sudanese people’s right to assembly and to avoid the use of violence.

star this property answer text
The UK continues to engage with a range of opposition, members of the protest movement as well as the Transitional Military Council (TMC). We have frequently called for the Sudanese authorities, both in public and directly with them in Khartoum, to ensure that peaceful protests are not met with violence and those responsible for the injuries and deaths of protestors are held to account. The UK, alongside Troika partners Norway and the US, has called for all sides to engage in an inclusive dialogue that leads to a swift, orderly and peaceful transition to civilian rule. On 4 June in a joint Troika statement, we condemned the recent violent attacks by Sudanese security forces against peaceful protestors in Sudan which left many civilians dead or injured. We also expressed serious concern over TMC's announcement that it would cease negotiations and called for an agreed transfer of power to a civilian-led government.

On 6 June, I summoned the Sudanese Ambassador to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to express our grave concerns at the use of violence against civilians by the Sudanese authorities. The UK has called for the human rights of all Sudanese people to be respected, and the resumption of the political process leading to an agreed peaceful transfer of power to a civilian-led government, as demanded by the Sudanese people. We will continue to engage with all sides to support a settlement that works for all Sudanese people.

The UK also continues to promote comprehensive peace negotiations through our role in the Troika. Alongside the US and Norway we engage regularly with the African Union (AU) building on long standing support to the AU's mediation efforts to encourage peace and security in Sudan.

star this property answer text
DFID recognises the essential role of Sudanese civil society in securing a transition to a stable political system that is inclusive, respects democratic norms and allows open and ongoing political dialogue. Until the end of 2018, the Local Partnerships for Dialogue Programme provided support to civil society, media, and women and youth groups, with the aim of strengthening their capacity to demand more inclusive, democratic and accountable governance.

DFID has resources within its current framework to continue the UK’s support of Sudanese non-state actors, and their important participation in the transition. This could take the form of support to the handover to a civilian-led government, through technical assistance to negotiation and mediation efforts; and further capacity building for civil society organisations to build their resilience and capacity to champion inclusive dialogue.
more like this
