star this property answer text
Since the abduction of human rights defender Mr Itai Dzamara in March 2015, the UK has worked closely with international partners to raise awareness of his case and to put pressure on the Government of Zimbabwe to investigate it. We regularly raise Mr Dzamara’s disappearance in the course of our discussions with the Government of Zimbabwe. Following a number of statements in 2015, the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe released a further statement on 9 March, in agreement with EU Heads of Mission in Zimbabwe, marking the one year anniversary of Mr Dzamara’s disappearance and expressing its deep disappointment at the lack of progress in this case. We urge the Government of Zimbabwe to take effective steps to prevent the disappearance of human rights defenders and other activists and to investigate existing cases.

The UK is not a signatory to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and therefore has not made representations to the Government of Zimbabwe to ratify it. However, there is an existing UK framework which protects human rights, prevents arbitrary arrests and holds national security organisations to account.

Officials have also met Chief of Defence Staff General Chiwenga.

These dramatic political events were clearly triggered by a military intervention. But the most important thing now is that Zimbabweans are able to exercise their constitutional right to elect a civilian government. This can only happen through free and fair elections. A re-establishment of a civilian-led government with a clear separation between the party and the state must be a priority. The UK has made this clear to the Government of Zimbabwe.

more like this

There is no evidence to suggest that the mosquitos that are known to carry Zika are established in the United Kingdom or could survive in our climate and therefore the risk to the UK population from Zika is very low. PHE is in regular contact with specialists in other European countries, as well as internationally, to make sure all necessary steps are being taken to protect the UK travelling public.
more like this

star this property answer text
It is the responsibility of local authorities to decide how to allocate funding for youth services according to local need, through the existing statutory duty (Education Act 2006, Section 507B). Government launched the Delivering Differently for Young People Programme to offer practical support to local authorities in exploring innovative and sustainable models for delivering youth services. Government continues to support the Centre for Youth Impact to work with youth organisations to undertake research to measure impact and demonstrate value to funders and commissioners. We are also committed to expanding National Citizen Service, which many youth sector organisations help to deliver. Government is taking new steps to encourage and enable social action. This includes a further £15m investment in the next phase of the Centre for Social Action. We want social action to become a lifelong habit.
more like this
