	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/03/2024 answer text <p>As part of the historic expansion of medical school places set out in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, we will ensure that there is adequate growth in foundation placement capacity, as those taking up these new places begin to graduate, and a commensurate increase in specialty training places is required. A decision regarding which specialities these places will be allocated to will be made nearer the time that the places are required for the expanded workforce. NHS England will work with stakeholders to ensure this growth is sustainable and focused in the service areas where need is greatest.</p><p>In 2023, the General Medical Council reported that there are 592 doctors in ophthalmology specialty training across England, which is 34, or 6.1%, more than in 2019. As of November 2023, there are 3,058 full-time equivalent (FTE) doctors working in the specialty of ophthalmology in National Health Service trusts and other core organisations in England. This is 214, or 7.5%, more than in 2019. Ophthalmic Practitioner Training is a training programme for hospital-based ophthalmic nurses, optometrists, and orthoptists who wish to develop skills in one or more of four sub-specialty areas: medical retina; glaucoma; cataract; and emergency ophthalmology. The programme is a collaboration between the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Royal College of Nursing, the College of Optometrists, and the British and Irish Orthoptic Society. It offers a standardised and supportive platform for these healthcare professionals to learn new clinical skills, for the benefit of their patients. 	question text	To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to help increase the number of doctors entering ophthalmology specialist training.

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/02/2023 answer text <p>As of October 2022, there were a total of 2,974 full time equivalent (FTE) doctors working in the Ophthalmology specialism in the National Health Service in England. This is an increase of 84 (2.9%) from October 2021. Of the 2,974 FTE doctors in the Ophthalmology specialism, there are 892 FTE doctors in training grades. This is an increase of 41 (4.9%) since October 2021.</p><p>Ophthalmology training places were increased in 2022 and further places are planned for 2023. The Government has also funded 1,500 more medical school places each year for domestic students in England, a 25% increase over three years. This expansion was completed in September 2020 and has delivered five new medical schools in England.
