star this property answer text <p /> <p /> <p>Currently, advice on immigration matters within the scope of Legal Aid can be given to detainees in HMP The Verne by any provider that holds an Immigration &amp; Asylum contract with the Legal Aid Agency (LAA).</p><p> </p><p>Earlier this year the LAA conducted an expression of interest exercise among existing contract holders providing immigration surgeries at other Immigration Removal Centres, with four providers confirmed as interested in operating surgeries in HMP The Verne. Communications will be issued shortly regarding when these services are likely to commence.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p /> <p>Alcohol and drug offences can have a very serious impact on individuals and wider communities, while also being a burden on our courts. This is why we have tough sentences in place for the most serious offences, including a life sentence for supply of Class A drugs.</p><p> </p><p>Our approach on drugs remains clear. We must prevent drug abuse in our communities, help dependent individuals through treatment and wider recovery support, while ensuring law enforcement protects society by stopping the supply.</p><p> </p><p>The number of people found guilty at all courts of alcohol and drug offences, by police force area, in England and Wales, and the figures as a percentage of the population in each police authority area, from 2009 to 2013 (the latest available) can be viewed in the table.</p><p> </p><p>Court proceedings data for 2014 are planned for publication in May 2015.</p><table><tbody><tr><td star this property answer text <p /> <p>Failed asylum seekers whose appeal rights have been exhausted are not allowed to work because they do not need our protection, have no right to remain in the United Kingdom and are required to leave. Our policy must maintain the distinction between those who need our protection and those seeking to work here. Allowing refused asylum seekers to work, even where removal is difficult, would send the wrong message and undermine the removal process by creating an incentive to frustrate removal.</p><p /> more like this

star this property answer text <p /> <p>The United Kingdom is bound by its obligations under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which makes clear that everyone has the right to freedom of expression. It also makes clear that this right carries duties and responsibilities and consequently can be restricted for the reasons set out in Article 10 where prescribed by law and necessary in a democratic society.</p><p> </p><p>In the Coalition Agreement the Government agreed that the obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights, including Article 10, will continue to be enshrined in UK law.</p><p> </p><p>The removal earlier this year of the word “insulting” from the offence under section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 is a concrete example of the Government keeping our legislation under review and ensuring it strikes the right balance in protecting freedom of speech.</p> more like this

The service provider for Yarl's Wood immigration removal centre (IRC), Serco, is required under their contract to employ sufficient female officers to enable appropriate searching and security arrangements for female detainees. <br><br>Yarl's Wood IRC has 52% male detainee custody officers (DCOs) and 48% female DCOs. A new recruitment drive is underway, with a review of how flexible and family friendly hours might be enhanced to attract more women recruits as well as devising recruitment campaigns that target female audiences. <br><br>Assessment Care in Detention and Teamwork (ACDT) is the system used for monitoring individuals considered to be at risk of self harm and is operated across the detention estate. <br><br>ACDT is a care planning system whereby staff from all areas work together to create a safe and caring environment and provide individual care to detainees.<br><br>All incidents of self harm are treated very seriously and every step is taken to prevent incidents of this nature. Staff at all centres are trained to <br>identify those at risk of self harm so that action can be taken to minimise the risk. Notices in various languages are displayed in IRCs setting out that, where there is a concern about a fellow detainee, this should be brought to the attention of a member of staff. Formal risk assessments on initial detention and systems for raising concerns at any subsequent point feed into established self harm procedures in every IRC, which are in turn underpinned by the Home Office Operating Standard on the Prevention of Self-Harm ACDT requires centre managers to appoint trained assessors and named case managers to provide individualised care to detainees based on their particular needs.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
